What Is A Maduro Cigar?

Maduro refers to the wrapper leaf that is used in cigar production. Maduro translates from Spanish to mean “Mature” or “Ripe”.

Maduro wrappers often have a chocolate or peppery taste to them, they are quite complex for a wrapper leaf which is mostly down to the fermenting process.

To produce these Maduro leaves, the flowers are removed from the tobacco plant which allows more sunlight to reach the leaves and gives them more natural oils and sugar which adds to the unique taste of this wrapper leaf. When picking the leaves, the top two thirds of the plant’s leaves are selected as these will be thick and sun-ripened enough to be able to cope with the heavy fermenting process.

Once the leaves are picked, they are cured in barns before being moved to the sorting house where they begin the fermentation process. Leaves that are to become Maduro wrappers are fermented for longer at a higher temperature, and then aged longer which is how they get their dark colour. This extra fermenting time makes the leaves richer and smoother. The nicotine levels in Maduro wrappers are lower than the filler and binder leaves, and also sweeter and oilier as the extra fermenting has turned the starch in the leaves to sugar.
