H. Upmann Cigars

History

Founded by German banker Herman Upmann, the brand began when Upmann moved to Havana in the early 1840s to open a banking office. A cigar enthusiast, he started sending cigars back to Europe, eventually purchasing a factory and launching the H. Upmann brand officially in 1844.

Though the business thrived, both the bank and cigar company eventually declared bankruptcy in 1922. The brand was sold to British firm J. Frankau & Co., then later to Menéndez y García - the creators of Montecristo - who revitalised the label before Cuba’s tobacco industry was nationalised post-revolution.

A notable fan of the brand was U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who famously stocked up on H. Upmann Petit Upmann cigars the night before signing the Cuban embargo in 1962—ordering a stash of 1,200 cigars.
