Rafael Gonzalez is a current pre-revolution cigar brand that first came to light under the name of La Flor de Marquez. The brand was established circa 1928 but the trademark wasn’t registered until 1936. Rafael Gonzalez cigars are made in the famous Romeo y Julieta factory, the brand was first developed with the British market in mind using a light tasting blend of tobacco leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region. It is said that the advice inscribed on each Rafael Gonzalez box that the cigars are packaged in 'should be smoked within one month of shipment or should be carefully matured for above one year' was written in his own hand by an English importer of the 1930's.
Rafael Gonzalez are believed to be the first cigar company to use the term Lonsdale to describe the shape of cigar that is 6.5” long by 42 ring guage – The factory name of this shape cigar is the Cervantes. The term Lonsdale comes from Hugh Cecil Lowther, the Fifth Earl of Lonsdale who was a famous English sporting Earl who was a passionate cigar aficionado of that time. This term is now in common use by other brands of cigars.
