The brand traces its roots back to around 1928, when it first appeared under the name *La Flor de Marquez*. The trademark for Rafael Gonzalez was officially registered in 1936. Production takes place at the world-famous Romeo y Julieta factory, using fine tobaccos from the prestigious Vuelta Abajo region.

Rafael Gonzalez has a unique place in cigar history, as its box inscriptions famously advise smokers to enjoy the cigars within one month of shipment or to age them for at least a year - guidance said to have been penned by an English importer in the 1930s. The brand is also credited with introducing the term “Lonsdale” to describe the elegant 6.5” x 42 cigar shape, now widely adopted across the industry.
