Herman Upmann was a banker from Germany who so loved Cuban cigars that he moved to Havana in 1844 and set up as both banker and cigar maker. His bank closed in the early 1920's but his cigars live on as a fine example of an elegant, light to medium flavoured Habano.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

More Info

It is very mild and smooth, with a little spicy and dark chocolate flavour. A fine smoke, with good complexity from beginning to end. This cigar is a rare treat.

91 / 100

"...A softly pressed corona with rounded edges and tapered shoulders. The burn is notably firm, but delivers a chewy smoke full of brown sugar notes and baking spices balanced by cedar and a marzipan finish..."

A nice looking cigar. Initial impressions were of a very light boodied cigar with some saltyness and the dryness you get with a nice dry Champagne. The Cuban flavours were there but very much in the background. The burn was a little uneven but became better behaved as the cigar progressed. The draw was spot on. This very light flavour continued a little too long for my liking. At around the halfway point the flavours ramped right up and the cigar became very enjoyable indeed. This phase didnt last as long as I would have liked. Then came the spicy mush which thankfully faded and made finishing the cigar more palatable. This cigar is not perfect however it is seductive. It is extremely smooth and of high quality and at times very enjoyable and I will certainly be buying more in the future. Recommended? - Yes. 4.5 Stars. Note - no dark chocolate detected at any point. Overall, despite its up and downs, one was left with the impression of a premium cigar that at times was very enjoyable and I would certainly consider buying another. [88 minutes]

Recently retired on health grounds I my late paternal grandfather, effectionarly known as Pomp’s, used to treat me to an occasional Havana cigar. I don’t smoke and thought I’d start smoking a Havana a day as a new hobby as I have the time 24/7. It’s raining and grey outside so my delightful partner, Tess, has opened our patio door. We have Buena Vista Spcial Club playing on our LG Oled Tv - live of course. This iH Upmann tastes more medium than mild for my palate. The final third the cigar became quite soft and I had to relight it twice and the burn was not consistent. The Por Larranaga Petit Coronas was more buttery on my palate. Time for a dance with my Tess.

Excellent stick, perfect construction which produced a neat ash. Nice bit of spice throughout, intensifying at the end. The last third of the cigar had a beautiful velvety smoothness to it. Very pleasant smoke

I had one of these from a sampler. And I must say it was lush. Didn't want to put it down. I would definitely recommend this for a beginner. I would say more of a light smoke. But still very enjoyable. Perfect draw. Lots of earthy notes come through. Just a enjoyable smoke during the day. To unwind from a busy day at work. I have to remember to buy some more and stock up these beauty's.

I found these to be a mixed bunch. I bought a 3pack in the airport having heard many a favorable review of the brand at a reasonable price. The first smoke was a beauty, even burn, fantastic draw and just the right sort of strength for me. However, the second smoke was awful, with looser wrapping and a really tight draw. The final one I found to be a mixture of the two, the wrapping was better but the draw was still a little tight. Could have been my fault though, I haven't yet mastered cutting the cigar at the sweet spot. Gave 4 stars because that first smoke was so brilliant, and the last may well have been bar human error. In my experience so far, 2/3 good smokes is a reasonable ratio.
