    H. UPMANN

    H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

    H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

    CORONA J

Formerly known as the H. Upmann Petit Upmann, this small cigar has the distinction of being the one that President Kennedy bought heavily just before he signed the US/Cuban trade embargo. A great cigar for beginners with a presidential pedigree to boot.

  • This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavours as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Simply excellent.

Reviews

Customers say
Customers generally find the H. Upmann Coronas J Tubed Cigar to offer a pleasant, mild smoking experience with notes of nuttiness and coffee, and a good smoking time. However, a significant number of reviewers reported issues with the draw on some cigars, leading to frustration and an inability to smoke them.
Best suited for those who appreciate a mild, flavourful Cuban cigar and are willing to accept the occasional inconsistency in draw, or for beginners looking for a smooth introduction to cigars.

My review of mid December has disappeared for the first of 3 (which I was disappointed with because the cigar did not draw at all and was virtually impossible to smoke). I gave 1/5 and said maybe it was badly made. Now I've smoked nos. 2 and 3 from the pack. I said I'd review nos. 2 & 3. They were fine, flavour OK for this sized cigar and didn't go out, as the first cigar did. So 2 & 3 I would give 3/5 or 4/5. Hope this review doesn't disappear.

I don't want to go too far in trying to explain these just yet. My first was a sublime experience, enough to buy another pack of three to lie down in my humidor for next Xmas. Still new to the Cuban experience I am still only searching for "carry" in a Cuban cigar. I'm looking for something to carry to me a place of new and fresh contemplation. And, I would say, with a couple of cups of good Italian coffee this little stick had me found. Lovely size, solid build and nice to hold. A lovely rich but not overwhelming smoke. The aficionados do well to recommend these to us beginners. JFK ensured he had 1,200 of these on hand before signing the embargo and I can now understand why.

The taste for me is quite unpleasant (feel like Im smoking a cohiba club mini), not until second third you got hints of coffee and honey but for the price, it is an everyday smoke :)

I find the draw on this slightly tough but forgiven for a pleasant light smoke which burns well and evenly with a slightly earthy tone , this was enjoyed with the first hint of summer after a good meal with no real complaints, would buy again.

Nice construction with a very dark, smooth wrapper. Yes it is small, but once flame hits leaf the smoke which pours out is more flavour filled than you might expect. A subtle floral flavour with a mild-medium body and hints of cedar wood and nuts. Ever so slightly sweet with a faint cocoa taste mid way through (age these for 6 months or more and these flavours are more obvious). A very nice cigar, which burns very slowly surprisingly. written by A. Dyer Eng
