The Dalmore distillery was established by Alexander Matheson in 1839, who after 28 years decided it was time to pass on the distillery to new owners, Andrew and Charles Mackenzie came forward. Andrew and Charles were descendants of the Mackenzie clan, who in 1263 saved King Alexander III from the fury of a charging stag. For saving the King the Mackenzie clan was granted the right to use the 12 pointed Royal stag emblem on their coats of arms.
So When Andrew and Charles became owners of The Dalmore distillery in 1867 they wanted to pay homage to the clan they were descendants of by proudly putting the stag on each bottle of Dalmore. Something that is continued to this day.
The Dalmore has been operating on the shores of the Cromarty Firth since the beginning; they use the water from the river Averon which runs through the small town of Alness.
