Lagavulin Facts You May Not Know

Lagavulin is a single malt scotch whisky from Islay, enjoyed all around the world. Here are some interesting facts you may not have known!

The oldest distillery on Islay

In 1816, John Johnston launched the first distillery where Lagavulin began producing whisky LEGALLY. However, according to Lagavulin, the brand’s distillery is the oldest on Islay, with whisky production believed to have taken place illegally in 1742, this is why many early labels listed 1742 as the beginning date of the whisky’s distillation.

Only six bottles in the range

There are six bottles in the Lagavulin family. The most well known is the Lagavulin 16, a full bodied single malt which has been aged in oak for at least 16 years and has plenty of smoky flavours with a spicy finish.

There is also the Distillers Editions which is double-matured in Pedro Ximinez casks as well as the 8 year old single malt which originally began life as a limited edition to celebrate Lagavulins 200th anniversary, however it was so popular that it became a standard release.

Finally they have two special release bottles, the 12 year old and a 26 year old Diageo.

It’s very popular in San Francisco

At the world spirits competition in San Francisco, the 16 year old flourished by winning four consecutive double gold medals between 2005 and 2008! But it was in 2017 when it secured the title of Best Distiller’s Single Malt and won a double gold medal!

Lagavulin pairs perfectly with jazz.

Since 2010, Lagavulin has sponsored the Islay Jazz Festival and began hosting their own festival in 2017. Each year a limited edition whisky which is released to celebrate the festival. The latest 2022 edition has been aged for 7 years in ex bourbon hogshead barrels.

They have an incredible distillery tour

While distillery tours might be becoming less popular, a visit to the Lagavulin distillery tour is an experience you’ll never forget! Known as “whisky country”, the island of Islay is home to many distilleries, which makes visiting the isle a treat for a true whisky fan.

The distillery is in a beautiful area of Port Ellen, housed between Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Visitors have the choice between tours, tastings and full warehouse experience, during which you can enjoy samples of Lagavulin while learning the history, you may even get to try unreleased expressions!

Lagavulin barrels could be used for your favourite Tequila

In 2019, the popular tequila brand Don Julio teamed up with Lagavulin distillery manager Colin Gordon to create a limited edition double cask Reposado tequila. After distillation, the special tequila received a unique finish as it is held for two weeks in casks previously holding Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
