Top 8 single malt cask finishes

Glenmorangie Nectar D'or - Finished in Sauternes wine casks, the light house style of Glenmorangie is complemented perfectly by the sweet dessert wine casks, adding complexity and a harmonious balanced sweetness to the whisky. Silken textures bring sumptuous layers of crème caramel and warming gingerbread on the palate, then nutmeg and toasted almonds entwine with meringue and honeycomb. Sweet, mellow finish with balancing lemon zest, vanilla cream and final traces of ginger and nutmeg.

Tomatin 12 Year Old 2008 Rivesaltes Cask - Part of 2021 Tomatin’s French Collection release, this whisky was distilled on 19th September 2008, marrying Tomatin’s characteristic fresh fruit notes incredibly well with the sweet nutty flavours for which Rivesaltes wine is known. Contrasting sweet and bitter flavours dominate the palate, held together by an underlying barley aroma. The finish is velvety with the flavours from the palate lingering for some time.

Laphroaig 10 Year Old Sherry Oak Finish - This new and exciting release was aged for ten years and finished in sherry casks. Quite a unique Laphroaig expression combining the unforgettable flavour of their classic 10 year old whisky with the sweetness and complexity of Oloroso sherry. Notes of Manuka honey, grilled bacon and maple syrup meet the classic peat smoke and seaweed that Laphroaig is famous for.

Stalla Dhu Single Cask Glen Elgin Port Wood - With this Single Cask Independent bottling of Glen Elgin, we decided to use Port casks for a further maturation, accomplishing a complex flavour profile, full of fruitiness, mellow nutty notes, gooseberry sweetness and treacle flavours. Palate coating finish with fruit nuances, perfect dram for sharing! Aged for 10 years, this whisky was distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2020 at the abv of 48% with only 268 bottles released.

Tomatin 12 Year Old 2008 Monbazillac Cask - First release from Tomatin’s French Collection. Distilled on 25th April 2008, this whisky’s aroma dances between notes of dark, maple syrup and intense espresso, balanced with cinnamon baked apples. On the palate there is a sweet cereal flavour combined with sweet milk chocolate and honeycomb ahead of subtle spices and emerging nutty flavours. The finish is rich with walnut and maple syrup.

Tullibardine 500 Sherry Cask Finish - Matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and then rested for a period of time in 500 litre Spanish sherry butts, giving this whisky its characteristic nutty brown colour. On the nose we can find intense toffee apple notes with a slight hint of oatmeal, which follows on the palate. This whisky is rounded up with a slight sweet spiciness, quite a rich finish with sweet dates and raisin notes.

Tomatin 12 Year Old 2008 Sauternes Cask - Second release from Tomatin’s French Collection, distilled on 19th September 2008, this whisky brings a burst of peach and apricot on the nose, calmed by rich Manuka honey. The sweet honey flavour continues on the palate accompanied by coconut and ginger. The finish is wonderfully sweet and fresh with a syrupy mouth feel indicative of the Sauternes wine that once occupied the cask.

Arran Amarone Cask Finish - After the initial maturation in traditional oak casks for a number of years, The Arran single malt is ‘finished’ in a selection of Amarone wine casks. The wine casks used in for this release were sourced from an artisan producer of Amarone wine in the Veneto region of Italy. A luxurious Italian wine meets a complex and vibrant Scottish character - there is a lot to love and appreciate about this scotch whisky!
