Tobacco Cultivation Regions: USA/Connecticut

The growing of cigar tobacco has a long history in the United States beginning in 1610 when Dutch settlers started cultivating in the Connecticut river valley. The cool, short growing season in the very broad glacier formed valley makes it the perfect place in the usually hot, humid and volcanic places where air-cured tobaccos are grown.

Broadleaf is a native seed of North America, it was imported from Maryland in 1833 to East Windsor, Connecticut. This is a sun grown, short, wide plant with big, drooping, elephant ear-like leaves that is grown for wrappers and binders. Unlike most other black tobaccos it is not primed but stalk cut - This is less labour intensive which in turn makes it one of the least expensive wrappers to buy, but it's thick nature and rough qualities require a large amount of bulking and ageing, this in turn then makes it one of the most expensive wrappers in the end.

In the 1870s Havana seed began being transplanted from Cuba. It is a bush like tobacco whose leaves stand upright from the stalk. Originally grown for wrappers and binders, this leaf fell out of favour for other Cuban-seed grown elsewhere. However it is making a comeback due to its rich spice, considerable strength and dark colour. Alternative names you may have heard instead of Cuban seed Connecticut include Medio Tiempo, Connecticut Sun-Grown and US Type 52.

Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9 translated to English means private blend, this is the perfect name as it was originally crafted for the personal humidors of Drew Estate. Seven different tobaccos are used including the Connecticut Broadleaf which is hand fermented for 18 months and no sweat is allowed. Only 4 pairs within the Drew Estate factory are certified to produce these cigars and each pair is only allowed to craft 250 cigars a day. The cigars are then aged for a full year before they go on sale.

Tatuaje Reserva is handcrafted with 1st generation Nicaraguan Cuban seed tobaccos cured to perfection and finished in Connecticut Broadleaf USA wrapper. These medium to full-bodied cigars balance perfectly with a rich, earthy and spicy complexity.

The Brick House Double Connecticut is hand rolled using a shade-grown wrapper and a broadleaf binder, both grown and aged in Connecticut. Similar to Brick Houses's other lines, this cigar consists of Nicaraguan filler leaves.
