Tobacco Cultivation Regions: Indonesia

Indonesia is by far the largest and most varied group of islands on Earth. It is draped over the equator and tends to have two seasons - hot & wet and hot & dry. The region is known for its immense volcanic activity with around four hundred volcanoes of which seventy are active.

Although tobacco found its way to Indonesia with Ferdinand Magellan's historic circumnavigation of the globe in 1521, it was the Dutch who started the cultivation of black tobacco for production in the 1850s. Almost all of the black tobacco cultivation occurs on the large islands of Sumatra and Java, due to the rich soil and climates being the ideal conditions.

Sumatran tobacco leaves are sun grown with the intention of it being a wrapper, it is regarded as a native seed black tobacco. This variety has a unique spicy flavour with a dry smoke that is very popular in Europe. Another popular leaf is Besuki, it is sun grown to be used as both a wrapper and filler in the Jember region in East Java (Jember is regarded as the best place in Indonesia to grow tobacco). Besuki is divided into two crops: Vroege Oogst (VO) which is Dutch for early harvest and Na Oogst (NO), Dutch for late harvest, It is considered a sweet aromatic leaf.

Cigars that use Indonesian tobacco:

Lanceros are usually a slim ring gauge but the Texas Lancero measures an incredible 7” by 70 ring gauge. It is built around a 4 year old Costa Rican filler as well as Nicaraguan and Honduran that has rich flavour and aroma with an Indonesian binder.

The Principe Short Robusto Maduro has an extra aged wrapper from Indonesia that gives sweetness to the earthy aroma and its notes of nuts without adding more strength. It is mild made with filler from the Cibao Valley and an Indonesian binder.
