The Mash Tun Distillery Tour

Fresh from an incredible three-night escape to Aberlour, and I can’t wait to share the highlights of what turned out to be the perfect blend of cigars, whisky, and camaraderie.

Day 1: Welcome

We arrived in Aberlour on Monday after a long but scenic train journey. The effort was absolutely worth it. After a quick moment to freshen up at The Mash Tun, we wasted no time and met with the other guests, armed with fine Cuban cigars and Stalla Dhu single cask whisky—a pairing that sets the tone for any great trip.

We headed straight to the Bothy for an evening of cigars and whisky. Starting with Partagás Lusitanias, it was the perfect introduction to the week. This classic cigar delivered its usual complexity and smoothness, and the Stalla Dhu whisky was the ideal complement.

Dinner followed, and it’s no exaggeration to say that one of my favourite parts of visiting The Mash Tun is the food. The chef has mastered the art of offering a wide selection without being overwhelming. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, or prefer classic options, there’s something to suit every taste.

After dinner, we retired to the lounge in the Lodge Apartment for more cigars and whisky. The cigar for the evening was a Vintage Cuaba Salomones, which lasted the entire night—a slow, luxurious smoke accompanied by great conversation.

Day 2: Distilleries, Cigars, and More Whisky

We started the morning with breakfast at the restaurant, enjoying what might be the best coffee in Scotland, along with a hearty meal to set us up for the day.

Our first distillery tour was at Glenfarclas, a personal favourite. The Mash Tun is perfectly located near several legendary distilleries, so arranging visits is a breeze. Seeing the process behind one of my favourite whiskies was fascinating and gave me a deeper appreciation for its craftsmanship.

Back at the hotel, we indulged in another exquisite meal before lighting up a cigar that holds a special place in my heart: the Ramon Allones Private Stock 230. This regional release is a true masterpiece and paired beautifully with yet another round of whisky.

Day 3: Scenic Walks and More Cigars

The final day began early with a hearty breakfast, a good start to fuel a full day ahead.

After breakfast, we headed out for a morning walk to take in the beautiful scenery around Aberlour. The tranquil river, picturesque waterfalls, and peaceful surroundings made it feel like a little piece of heaven. It was the perfect moment to unwind and appreciate everything Aberlour offers—good company, a stunning setting, and that unmatched feeling of tranquillity.

Following the walk, we visited the cooperage to learn about how whisky barrels are made. It’s an essential step in the whisky production process since much of the flavour comes from the barrel itself. With just three ingredients—water, yeast, and barley—barrel craftsmanship plays a significant role in creating the distinctive taste of each whisky.

After a quick stop back at the hotel for lunch and a smoke, we set off for the final distillery tour at GlenAllachie. It was a fitting way to close out the trip, with the VIP tour offering a deeper dive into the production process and a generous selection of whiskies to sample.

Farewell Evening

Back at The Mash Tun, we gathered for one last dinner to reflect on the incredible three days we had shared. The chef once again delivered a memorable meal, paired beautifully with dessert and, of course, whisky.

To mark the occasion, we raised a glass to our new whisky liqueur with a pre-launch toast—a moment of pride and excitement for what’s to come. For the final cigar of the trip, I chose a Punch Double Corona from 1999. With its rich, mellow flavours of leather and cedar, it was a fitting end to a perfect evening.

Pre-orders for the whisky liqueur will be opening soon, and I’d highly recommend keeping an eye out for it. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this one

Honestly, this trip was so good I can’t wait for the next one. The combination of stunning scenery, exceptional cigars, and world-class whisky made it unforgettable. I’m seriously considering making this a twice-a-year tradition because once just isn’t enough.

Stay tuned for updates—The Mash Tun is already calling me back. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for the whisky liqueur launch. You’ll want to grab a bottle (or two) before it sells out!
