The History of The Ship Inn Building – New Home of C.Gars Norfolk

Turmeaus Norfolk Headquarters has moved premises over the last year and we are very proud of our brand-new premises in Great Yarmouth.
Inside you will find a large walk in humidor which boasts a fantastic range of cigars, a whisky room containing some of the finest whisky and other spirits, a magnificent pipe room showcasing the best of our pipe selection, a modern and bright shop floor.

Our building is a Grade II listed building which has a lively naval history. Built in the late 17th Century, The Ship was a purpose-built inn until 2008 when it later became part of the neighbouring NHS Medical Centre until January 2017, and then shortly later taken over by ourselves.

In 1797 The Ship was used to hold Dutch naval prisoners of war after the Battle of Camperdown, however it is reported that seven of these prisoners, all surgeons, escaped and it is not known if they were ever re-captured. The remaining prisoners were relocated to Eye in neighbouring county Suffolk. This historic event is now commemorated with a blue plaque outside the building.

The C Gars store now located in this fine building has undergone an extensive refurbishment in the last 2 years to create a unique, inviting environment and is also home of our website headquarters dispatching thousands of parcels on a weekly basis. So if you haven’t been in to see us yet, what are you waiting for!
