The history

In 1923 founder Shinjiro Tori had a vision,to create a subtle yet complex

Japanese whisky that would enhance the Japanese dining experience.  Shinjiro was inspired by Scottish highland whisky however decided that Japenese approach would work, this included changing the terrain and climate creating his own whisky.  Shinjiro decided Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto was the perfect place for the birthplace of Japanese whisky.

Suntory have 3 distilleries, the original Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distillery. Hakaushu was opened in 1973 by was opened by keizo saji, the son of Shinjiro who has continued his fathers quest to push the boundaries on japanese whisky.  Chita was opened in 1972 dedicated to creating the highest quality grain whisky.

The whisky

The Yamazaki range and is signature multi-layered taste is highly praised by whisky connoisseurs across the world.  It is the number 1 whisky in Japan and enjoyed in more than 35 countries, including the UK. You can find our Yamazaki range here.

The Hakushu range is a more crisp and vibrant whisky praised by whisky connoisseurs and gastronomies across the world. The fresh water from the south Japan mountains is what gives the Hakushu range a green and fresh feel.

The Chita range is made with versitile flavours and exquisite balance, Chita grain whiskies have traditionally been used as broth that enhances the harmony of the Suntory blends.

In 1989 Suntory brought out Hibiki whisky, Keizo Saji decided to make a blended whisky which reflects Suntory flavours at their best, the result of this is Hibiki a truly harmonious blend rich in japanese culture and craftmanship. Hibiki has become one of the most highly awarded and honoured whiskies in the world.

Awards

Suntory has won many whisky awards from distiller of the year to their individual whiskies. All the ranges have won gold in numerous years from different judges panels showing that Suntory knows exactly what they are doing. Find the full Suntory range here.
