El Rey del Mundo - The King of the World
El Rey del Mundo was at one time the most expensive and prestigious cigar brand in the world, no wonder in Spanish El Rey del Mundo means King of the World.
The History of El Rey del Mundo Cigars
It is believed that El Rey del Mundo was created along with Sancho Panza by german businessman Emilio Ohmstedt in 1848. Around 1882 Spanish businessman Antonio Allones took over the brand and pushed it on to new heights, eventually becoming known worldwide.
In 1905 Allones sold the company to the Diaz Hermanos y Cia venture, owned by Candido Vega Diaz. Production was moved to a factory at 852 Calle Belascoain in Havana. The company also produced other well known brands such as Sancho Panza and Rafael Gonzalez.
Production continued after the Cuban Revolution and the brand maintained its popularity through the 1960s and 1970s. As the world started to run towards stronger cigars, the milder El Rey del Mundo brand began to lose its status as the most prestigious brand in the world. Despite this El Rey del Mundo are still known for their mild, complex flavours which are still loved by cigar connoisseurs.
