Ready Rubbed vs Flake Cut

The type of pipe tobacco cut can significantly impact the overall experience. Two of the most popular cuts are Ready Rubbed and Flake Cut, each offering unique characteristics that appeal to different preferences and smoking styles.

Ready Rubbed: This is essentially a Flake Cut tobacco that has been pre-rubbed into fine pieces, making it easier to pack and smoke straight away. Due to its consistent cut, Ready Rubbed tends to burn a lot more evenly, reducing the likelihood of frequent relights. Due to it being pre-rubbed, it is also a convenient option for on the go smokers. However, since the manufacturer does the rubbing process, smokers have less control over the texture, it also loses its moisture faster which can lead to a harsher smoke if not stored properly.

Flake Cut: This comes in pressed sheets or flakes. It requires the smoker to rub it out before packing or fold and stuff the flakes into the bowl for a slower-burning experience. Due to the slow burn (especially when folded and stuffed) it will provide a longer smoking experience, making it ideal for those who enjoy a prolonged session. Due to the tobacco being pressed together, it retains the moisture better, which can result in a richer, cooler, and more flavourful smoke. However due to the way it is cut, it can be seen as inconvenient for some smokers. It is also harder to pack correctly to achieve an even burn, making it beginner-friendly and if it is not packed properly, Flake Cut tobacco may cause uneven burning, leading to relights.

So which one is better?
There is no definitive answer to which one is better. It all depends on your preferences and smoking habits. Ready Rubbed is great for those who want a straightforward, consistent smoke without extra effort, making it appealing to beginners and casual smokers. On the other hand, Flake Cut offers a more customisable and often more rewarding experience for those who enjoy a longer, slower-burning smoke with rich flavours.

For those new to pipe smoking, I would recommend Ready Rubbed due to how easy it is to use. However, experienced smokers or those seeking a richer experience might prefer Flake Cut, as it allows greater control over the smoking process and delivers a longer lasting bowl.

Experimenting with both types is the best way to determine which suits your smoking style. Many smokers even keep both available for different occasions. Ready Rubbed for a quick and easy smoke, and Flake Cut for a slower session. Regardless of your choice, proper storage and packing techniques will ensure the best smoking experience possible.
