Scotland has a rich history making whisky, however they also have a history with pipes and tobacco. One notable brand coming from Scotland is Rattrays. The brand was founded by Charles Rattray in 1903 in Perth, Scotland. Charles developed a passion for tobacco at a young age, he established a small tobacco shop in Perth and called it “The House of Rattray”. Charles quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional skill in blending tobaccos. His blends became highly sought after and were considered some of the best in the market.
Initially, the focus was on blending tobacco. However, as demand grew, Rattrays began to offer pipes as well as other smoking accessories. The pipes became known for their high-quality craftsmanship. They are made from the finest briar wood and designed to provide an excellent smoking experience.
After World War II, Rattrays continued to thrive. The company’s commitment to quality as well as creating several innovative designs and finishes, helped maintain their reputation despite the challenges of the post-war economy.
Today, Rattrays pipes are still known for their quality and craftsmanship. The company offers a wide range of designs, from classic shapes to more modern styles. It is because of this, Rattrays has a global customer base and is highly respected among pipe smokers and collectors alike.
The company has a significant influence on the pipe-making industry. Many contemporary pipe makers draw inspiration from Rattrays designs and blending techniques. The original Rattray’s blends, such as Red Rapparee and Old Gowrie, are still incredibly popular today and are considered classics among pipe tobacco enthusiasts.
In the 1980s, the Rattrays brand was acquired by the German company Kohlhase & Kopp, a German company known for its dedication to preserving traditional pipe-making techniques, while incorporating modern innovations. Under the management of Kohlhase & Kopp, Rattrays continues to produce high-quality pipes and tobaccos whilst staying true to the brand’s heritage.
Rattrays has remained a staple in the pipe-smoking community for over a century. Their commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation has ensured they remain a household name in the tobacco industry.
