OLIVA

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

SERIE V

Serie V is a complex blend of Nicaraguan long filler tobaccos. Blended with specially fermented Jalapa Valley ligero, and finished with a high priming Sun Grown Wrapper.

Tasting Notes

This flavourful blend exhibits complex tobacco with rich coffee and dark chocolate tones. A subtle and well balanced spice is present throughout.

95 / 100

"...Ten years ago, Oliva Cigar Co. released its Serie V, which was the strongest, most full-bodied cigar the company ever created. But it was also impressive in its ability to render layers of richness and complexity in spite of its power. Ten years later, we found ourselves with the same excellent product. It's difficult enough to maintain such quality and consistency, but even more of an accomplishment when you consider this: Oliva has been acquired by a larger company. In 2016, Oliva Cigar was bought by European cigarmaker J. Cortés Cigars N.V., who wanted a premium brand in its portfolio. Naturally, there were concerns about the Oliva cigars changing and quality suffering. Luckily for the cigar-smoking world, J. Cortés kept Oliva president José Oliva on board after the acquisition, to help ensure that quality was maintained. So far, the change has been seamless and the Serie V remains remarkable for its ability to convey high volumes of flavor, especially at such a low price point. The blend is centered around strong, ligero tobacco from Nicaragua's Jalapa Valley and a high-priming wrapper to complete the taste profile, which is rich in earth, leather and spice though balanced with a sweet touch of molasses..."

A lovely cigar and I can safely say I shall be adding this to my top 10 list. Lots of sweetness with chocolate and coffee flavours along with some spiciness. Very creamy too. Simply exquisite.

In my 20s and this was my first big cigar, having tried a couple cigarillos before. On arrival I kept it at 70% humidity in a humidor bag for 2 weeks. Quality: Dark oily wrapper. Really smooth smoke, white ash that never fell off. Razor sharp burn until it got 2/3 done, when a bad wiggle appeared and it went out (ash related?), but was nearly ready to finish then anyway. Lasted over an hour outside. Flavour: Nice rich tobacco flavours. I think I could taste coffee/chocolate (yeah i'm new). Definitely tasted leathery as it got to the halfway point down. Drink with cognac and coke helped clear the occasional bite at back of throat. Strength: Could be a bit strong in nicotine for new people (like myself). I had several meals before and shared this, and I still got a big nicotine rush for 5-10 mins. Although I didn't feel unwell at all. Delivery: Cgarsltd delivered in a bubble-wrap padded jiffy bag, with the cigar inside their own high quality custom card/plastic boxes to help prevent crushing damage. Got some leaflets and a humidor bag. These also came in their own individual plastic wrap. Cigars arrived at perfect humidity.

I've just recently got into smoking cigars and have been trying different brands to see what I like, wow this cigar is amazing. Firstly the construction was impeccable. Beautiful dark chocolate oily wrapper with a stunning band wrapped around it, I took a good few mins admiring it's beauty and it's aroma. The light and first draw was a delight with a pleasent coco coffee hit and lots of lovely smelling smoke. First 1/3 was gorgeously smooth with some hints of nuts and dark coca beans. 2/3 I got my first big nicotine hit and the smoke got even smoother, the nutty taste has submerged and I was greeted with a more ntense coco coffee leathery taste. 3/3 wow this cigar packs a punch, much the same as the 2/3 but much stronger, I smoked this until I couldn't hold it anymore and boy did this cigar knock me for six, beng still a novice to cigar smoking and haven't not eaten, I felt what I can only describe as cigar drunk. I will definitely eat before smoking one of these again and maybe less coffee. Overall a beautiful cigar in taste, construction and smoke, can't recommend it enough, I will most certainly be getting more.

Having smoked a number of these now, I feel it is fair to say that each and every one of them has been faultless. The latest that I have smoked was just as good as each and everyone beforehand. The appearance of this cigar is fantastic, a smooth wrapper that looks oily and dark, just by looking at this cigar you know its going to be special. Everyone that I have purchased has cut very cleanly and the pre draw has been fantastic. They toast well and the burn is even throughout, producing masses of thick creamy smoke, each one has held the ash for a good 1.5". Flavour wise(yesterdays smoke)I picked up dark chocolate with no bitterness at all in the first third, in the second third it was more reminiscent of a mocha (so much so it prompted me to order one after I had finished) in the final third the flavour became much more intense a real power house of strong coffee and leather coming through. Perfect. I really do love these cigars, not my number 1 but its on the top 3 and deserves a solid 5 stars.
