The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

Serie V is a complex blend of Nicaraguan long filler tobaccos. Blended with specially fermented Jalapa Valley ligero, and finished with a high priming Sun Grown Wrapper.

Tasting Notes

This flavourful blend exhibits complex tobacco with rich coffee and dark chocolate tones. A subtle and well balanced spice is present throughout.

95 / 100

"...Ten years ago, Oliva Cigar Co. released its Serie V, which was the strongest, most full-bodied cigar the company ever created. But it was also impressive in its ability to render layers of richness and complexity in spite of its power. Ten years later, we found ourselves with the same excellent product. It's difficult enough to maintain such quality and consistency, but even more of an accomplishment when you consider this: Oliva has been acquired by a larger company. In 2016, Oliva Cigar was bought by European cigarmaker J. Cortés Cigars N.V., who wanted a premium brand in its portfolio. Naturally, there were concerns about the Oliva cigars changing and quality suffering. Luckily for the cigar-smoking world, J. Cortés kept Oliva president José Oliva on board after the acquisition, to help ensure that quality was maintained. So far, the change has been seamless and the Serie V remains remarkable for its ability to convey high volumes of flavor, especially at such a low price point. The blend is centered around strong, ligero tobacco from Nicaragua's Jalapa Valley and a high-priming wrapper to complete the taste profile, which is rich in earth, leather and spice though balanced with a sweet touch of molasses..."

Although I do enjoy smoking Cuban cigars more so than new world cigars, this one is definitely a great exception. The flavours are beautiful and the complexity is definitely there. Its not the largest cigar from Oliva but for one reason or another, this cigar seems to almost always last me a pretty good amount of time to smoke. TI thoroughly enjoy this smoke and highly recommend it.

Beautiful from start to finish. Im not an everyday smoker, maybe one a week two if im being naughty, so its always good to have a smoke that is good from start to finish. The beauty had a lovely even burn throughout, produced a lovely amount of smoke without being too much, the flavours were subtle and enjoyable. I enjoyed it with a nice coffee, but would pair nicely with a good whiskey of your choice. Maybe a Bowmore No. 1, or Jura Seven barrels. Lastest around 45 minutes with a leisurely drag, long enough for my wife to come looking for me in the shed My only complaints are it had to end and I only bought the one.

My word, what a cigar! First 1/4 of the first third was a little peppery but then it calms down nicely. Great smoke output very nice. The second third is where this cigar came alive for me. Subtle dark chocolate and some pepper with a nice floral finish. The final third is more powerful but not bitter in anyway. I could have smoked this down to the end. The burn was nice and even throughout with the ash holding on well into the second third! The drew was a little tight but was still easy enough to pull. It took about 50mins to smoke but I must say I probably smoked it a little quick as I found it rather moreish Very very nice cigar. I could easily and probably will buy a box of these. A good one to give to friends who appreciate cigars but dont want their heads blown off. Im glad I bought 3 of these!

Beautiful flawless appearance and construction with a dark oily wrapper. Solid and well packed.Typical grassy light hay notes turning to chocolate, spices, coffee. A complex and very heady cigar that showed some class, but would benefit from some more ageing - hence 4*

For a relatively inexperienced cigar smoker this beautiful offering from Oliva is hard to fault. It is a striking looking cigar, dark and rich, with that fabulous oversized band. Toasts and lights with ease. The draw is absolutely perfect and the flavours are deep and complex. Mine started off fairly mild but ramped up in strength and depth of flavour in the second third. Construction was excellent, holding ash until the band with ease (and then it only dropped because of my own lack of care). The rest held until I was in danger of charring my finger tips, trying to enjoy every millimetre. The burn line was a little uneven, but never enough to need correcting. I am not qualified to give taste notes, but for me there was leather and chocolate with little hint of spice (which increased in the final third). Zero bitterness and very little pepper. Smooth, rich and creamy, with a delicate sweetness on the inhale. I just wish it had a slower burn in order that I could have enjoy it for longer. Chosen as an indulgent Fathers Day treat, enjoyed after a roast beef dinner, outside with a rum ... heavenly. I just wish I had order more than one. Please, try one for yourself, I am sure that you will not be disappointed Paul. Aka Incubus
