The Montecristo Supremos is the first of the much anticipated 2019 Habanos Limited Edition to be released in the UK. It is presented in a bespoke, Montecristo yellow box of 25 cigars and shares it’s dimensions with the ever-popular Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill, measuring 5 ¼” (130mm) and with a ring gauge of 55.

This is the 10th time that Montecristo, the world’s best selling Havana brand, has been called upon to produce a prestigious Limited Edition and no other brand has produced more.

Within the Limited Edition series, which began in 2000 and can now boast of having over 60 releases, there are just three cigars with a larger diameter than the Montecristo Supremos.

Tasting Notes

This medium to full bodied cigar provides an hour or so of classic ‘tangy’ Montecristo taste, with the dark wrapper providing a slightly sweet top-taste to the blend and the extra ageing of all the leaves ensuring a rounded, smooth smoke.

Lovely wrappers on these, not like with some of the older Limitadas. Also some actual Montecristo flavour in the profile. Rich, darker chocolate, coffee bean, cream and leather (which builds mostly in the second half) and a somewhat nicaraguan-esque deep earthiness throughout but with just a little black pepper zing. Solid medium to full, building in intensity in the final third. Not a great deal of evolution, mostly a build in intensity, but the leather comes out much more in the back third. Got pretty hot in the final third but this should fade with some years of good aging. These need at least 12 months as they stand really, but they have a lot of legs on them to age for many years. There are still plenty of regular production cigars which I would much prefer, even ignoring the extra price for the EL, especially with a few years on them, but certainly an enjoyable smoke.

A beautiful cigar, I was lucky enough to purchase four of them and will keep the other three in one of my humidors for a couple of years to mature, but I had to smoke the fourth one,a nice slow even burn and typical Montecristo spicy flavours with an excellent built quality that you expect from them, it will be interesting to see how these cigars develop over the years, like the Cohiba 2004 Sublime that got better year after year.........so does the 2019 Montecristo stack up to the Cohiba 2004 ? ( my favourite cigar ) well in its youth not yet.... but in years to come it well migbt rival them, we shall wait and see .
