As well as standard lines from Habanos, there are also limited release cigars available either exclusively in the UK i.e. Regional Editions or Limited Editions available worldwide.
Since 2000, when the first four were released, Habanos SA have released a number of exceptional cigars branded with the Ediciones Limitadas band, or Limited Edition band. The Limited Edition band also states which year the cigar is from, except with the first releases in 2000.
Limited Edition Habanos are always produced by the top brands of Cuban cigars, they are created in rare or unusual sizes with a dark wrapper and use extra aged tobacco. They are then produced only in the year that they are limited to making them even more rare and collectable. The reason for the sizes being rare is the fact that they must not reproduce a size that is usually made by that specific brand. These can be sizes that have not been seen in many years (such as the Partagas Serie D No. 1 which had not been seen since the 1950's) or they can be completely new sizes (such as the Cohiba Sublimesmade in 2004.)
The dark wrappers come from the top of shade-grown tobacco plants, these leaves then need to be fermented and aged for longer, up to 9 months for fermentation and over a year for ageing. Up until 2006, the filler and binder were fermented and aged in the same way as the standard production cigars, however they are now subject to an extra ageing process. All leaves are now a minimum of 2 years old before they are rolled by hand into the Limited Edition cigars.
This extra aging process results in a more rounded, mellow flavour and a higher sugar content in the wrapper gives it a hint of sweetness.
Until 2005, Limited Edition cigars were only made by the top 5 producers, they were:
Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Partagas and Hoyo de Monterrey.
After 2005, four more brands joined this exclusive group, they were:
H. Upmann, Trinidad, Cuaba, Bolivar and Ramon Allones.

Since 2005, the companies that normally distribute Habano cigars in different territories around the world have been invited by Habanos SA to bid for the chance to create their own sizes in less well known Habanos brands. These are then made in limited quantities for sale only in their own markets. These cigars are known as Regional Editions.
In fact the first regional edition was the incredible Ramon Allones Belicosos for the UK market released in 2004 (64 very rare and desirable boxes presented as ‘Orchant Seleccion’)
To qualify being called a Regional Edition cigar they must be of limited production in a standard Habanos vitola (size) that is new to that particular brand. They must only be sold to customers in the distributors area and since 2006 have been available in individually numbered boxes with each cigar having a second band. The second band for cigars heading to the UK market used to read "Exclusivo Reino Unido" (Exclusive to United Kingdom) but since 2011 has been changed to "Exclusivo Gran Bretana" (Exclusive to Great Britain)
