Montecristo is the best known and probably most appreciated brand of Habanos throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Habanos smokers against which other brands are judged.

The name comes from the hero of Alexandre Dumas' famous novel 'The Count of Montecristo,' which was a firm favourite when read by the Lector to the Torcedores (cigar makers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935.

The original Montecristo range of sizes was composed of a narrow assortment numbered from 1 to 5. Today it consists of a wide variety of vitolas to cover every level of the cigar enthusiast's needs.

The long and eagerly awaited Montecristo Dantès has finally been released and are available for sale, albeit a few months late. The Dantès are a 2016 Limited Edition and are presented in SBN boxes containing 10 cigars, each dressed with the Edition Limitada second band. The cigar is a Hermoso No.1 (6⅝"(167mm) x 48 ring gauge) and the Dantès will be the first cigar of this vitola to be represented in the iconic Montecristo marque.

The Dantès was named after Edmundo Dantès, the lead character of Alexandre Dumas 1844 novel The Count of Monte Cristo which proved to be the inspiration for the name of the brand back in the 1930’s when the novel was read to and enjoyed by the torcedors of the day as they hand crafted their masterpieces, a practice still in vogue today.

Limited Edition cigars use specially selected tobacco leaves grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone which are all then aged for a minimum of two years.

Tasting Notes

90 / 100

"...A large cigar with an even draw. There's a sweet-and-salty character to the smoke, with some earthy notes, a touch of graham cracker and a cinnamon finish..."

In defence of this fine cigar, I have to both agree and disagree with my esteemed co-reviewers here. Im currently sitting in my easy chair puffing on one of these bought for me by my son-in-law (a fellow of fine and impeccable taste!) for my birthday. Im paring it with a tumbler of Johnnie Walker Green (in my option the best of the Johnnie Walkers) with just a splash of water to open up the flavours. The draw is good and even, although the finest draws of any cigar Ive ever smoked has to go to the excellent Punch Punch. This particular Montecristo Dantes is well made, with a hint of spiciness at the beginning, and has a rich chestnut-brown wrapper. It is burning evenly and as a consequence is a very rewarding experience. The ash is well compacted with a dark slate grey hue which is interwoven with lighter shades of grey. I have in the past suffered a badly made Cuban cigar and it was an awful experience. It is the downside of Cuban quality control that sadly quite a few inferior cigars get through to the customer. My advice is that if you want consistently well made cigars you probably need to opt for a Davidoff or one of the Alec Bradleys, but of course nothing matches the flavour of a fine Cuban cigar. Half way through my Monte and the spice has fallen away and the flavours have intensified and Im tasting bourbon biscuits, wood-smoke and leather. The taste (apart from the falling away of the spice) has been consistently good and is a credit to the Torcedor who made it. Im guessing it was rolled by one who cares for his/her craft. This Cuban is proving to be a good smoke and so to close my review I would like to cheekily quote Kipling re Cuban cigars: And a woman is only a woman, but a good Cigar is a Smoke. Light me another CubaI hold to my first-sworn vows. If Maggie will have no rival, Ill have no Maggie for Spouse!

As pointed in another review draw can be troublesome. This is a hefty, densely packed cigar that might require patience and/or a good set of lungs. If you're not discouraged however this limited edition is a mightily flavoursome, earthy and as you proceed, mildly spicy affair that is certainly worth the money. It will produce a cloud of intense smoke that is a joy to be enveloped in. What elevates it (for some and certainly for this smoker too) is the appearance. Deep colours of the oily wrapper and even burn make this a quality cigar that is a sight to behold.

This cigar wouldn't last 5mins in the Old West... it's the worst draw cigar I've ever had apart from a packet of Montecristos I bought at Madrid Airport 20 years ago. I think Montes tend to be hard-packed anyway but this one, the Dante, seemed to have mucho stalks in it. It was difficult to get a puff out of it from the start and hardly got any better as it went. Eventually I tired of it and consigned it to the fireback with still more than 2 inches to go. And it had burnt lopsided. Altogether the worst cigar for the money.

Wow! Just wow! If I could give 6 stars I would. This cigar is sublime and actually worth the money, typical Montecristo flavours that have a nice intensity, medium to full body and construction was flawless. The point I really want to make is that this cigar oozes quality, I've never felt such an oily wrapper before and this is the best cigar I've had the joy of smoking...probably.
