Lancero Cigars

Lancero size cigars are a very distinctive and elegant type of cigar known for having a long and slender shape. They tend to be around 7 inches long, with a ring gauge of 38-40, which is considered very slim for a cigar.

Despite cigars having a long history, Lanceros actually have a short history. The first Lancero was created by Cohiba in Cuba in 1960. It was specifically made for Fidel Castro, known as the El Laguito No. 1, it was made by one man - Avelino Lara. Avelino became the head of Cohiba’s factory but eventually escaped Cuba in the 1990’s to produce cigars in the Bahamas. Due to the difficulty in rolling such a slim cigar, the Lancero wasn’t copied for a long time until Davidoff started making them after they left Cuba in 1991.

Lanceros are incredibly popular amongst true cigar aficionados. They are appreciated for their flavours and elegance, however they are less popular with casual smokers who view the size complexing and too slender. Aficionados will also appreciate the skill of the cigar roller. Producing a well constructed lancero is much more challenging than larger cigars, making a high quality lancero highly prized.

When you enjoy a Lancero for the first time you will see what a different size cigar can do to the flavour. Due to the smaller ring gauge, the flavours are more concentrated which will provide you with an intense flavour experience. The amount of filler tobacco is also less in a Lancero which means the wrapper, which is often the most flavourful part of a cigar, will be more prominent and highly influence the taste of the cigar. As the diameter of a lancero is much narrower than most cigars, they require careful construction to ensure an even burn and easy draw. Lighting it correctly is also important as the diameter is small, so one mistake can destroy the cigar.

Lancero cigars offer a unique smoking experience, by creating such a slim cigar, the flavours really shine throughout.
