How to Find the Perfect Cigar

Cigar aficionados tend to stick with what they know, otherwise why spend money on a cigar to not enjoy it? As they say though “variety is the spice of life!”, therefore sometimes it’s good to mix it up and introduce your palate to the ever growing and wonderful flavours there is out there to discover.

Whether you’re looking for a new everyday smoke or you are just stepping into the cigar world, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself:

When do I want to enjoy my cigar?
How much time will I have to enjoy it?
Will I need to store my cigar?
What is my budget?

Once you know the answer to these you will be on the right path to finding your perfect smoke.

When it comes to your own personal budget, there’s no need to be afraid of the lower budget smokes, there are some excellent value cigars which don’t compromise on the overall quality. At C.Gars Ltd we like to make the experience finding your cigar as easy as possible, try our Advanced Search and just alter price range for your preference.

The time you have to smoke your cigar plays a big part too, you don’t want to be picking up a large, 2 hour smoke when you only have a spare 30 minutes to sit back, relax and enjoy; you’ll just waste your cigar – it’s never good practice to go back to a cigar you’ve left to go out as you can lose some of the nicer flavours and replace with some that are… not so nice.

Make sure you know when and where you will be smoking your cigar, this then gives you a guideline on what size to go for. If you only have 30 minutes, it’s ideal to go for a Petit Corona size, for example one of the world’s most popular cigars; the Montecristo No. 4. If you have around an hour, you have sizes like Edmundo, Lancero and Piramide. You then have the quicker smokes, ideal if you are going on a short walk or just want to get in a quick cigar without sacrificing on time, the Panatela and Perla are perfect for this. Or even less time, there are some superb quality mini and purito size cigars which won’t compromise on flavour or quality and should only last 5 – 10mins.

Storing your cigars doesn’t have to be as intimidating as it seems, with the humidor, hygrometer, humidifier, storing conditions and everything else which goes into keeping your cigars as fresh as possible. If you are looking to get a one-off smoke you don’t have to think about the ins and outs, it can be as simple as popping your cigar in a zip-lock bag. We always recommend also using a Boveda humidification pouch if you want a simple and quick storage solution. If you have the one-off smoke, go for a humipouch which keeps your cigars perfectly humid and ready to smoke for up to 30 days.

Other factors come into finding your perfect cigar, speaking to other smokers, trial and error, as well as seeking the advice of one of our cigar specialists through live chat, email or over the phone. It’s always nice to hear what other people are enjoying at the moment and hearing about new ranges.

We also have plenty of cigar samplers on our site, pointing you in the right direction whether you are looking for a lighter smoke, fuller smoke and even a specific size. Cigar Samplers are a great way of trying a selection of different cigars which are similar in either flavour, size, strength or brand. There’s also many which will give you a range of different characteristics which may help you fine tune your palate.

Remember, there’s never a right or wrong answer when picking a cigar, what works for one person may not work for someone else – it’s all unique to the individual and there are so many factors which may make a difference (such as mood, how ready the palate is, vintage, how it’s stored etc.) The trick is to sample as many as you can whilst returning to the ones you’ve particularly enjoyed – and maybe laying some down to return to as well as mature and develop.
