High Coast Whisky

An interesting distillery to say the least! One of just under 20 distilleries making whisky in Sweden, but only 1 of 2 large enough to have whisky on the market. High Coast and Macmyra. Bringing all that northern Sweden has to offer into a fantastic whisky offering!

Started distilling in 2010 as Box Whisky, but was later changed to High Coast Whisky so they wasnt confused with Compass Box Whisky. The original name came about because they set up shop in a former wooden box factory, that aside I think High Coast is a much better name! Initially shooting for around 90,000 litres of spirit a year, but expanding their capacity to 350,000 litres. They produce 2 new-make recipes, one peated and one unpeated.

The unpeated recipe pulls a lot of inspiration from Japanese style flavours of clean and fruity. While the peated pulls from the timeless flavours of the west coast of Scotland. High Coast has many different factors that go into creating their tasty single malts, but easily the most unique out of all of them being the distillery’s location. High Coast’s location makes it one of the most unique whisky regions in the world, with no other region like it. The beautifully set distillery sits over 300 miles north of Stockholm on the Ångerman River, which is one of the longest rivers in Sweden. The region has such a big swing in temperatures between seasons, which makes the spirit maturation quite special to them. A cold winter’s day could bring the temps down to -30c and a high in the summer could shove the temperature up to +30c. This creates a unique dynamic between the the oak and the spirit inside.

High Coast is open to visitors normally, offering distillery tours and tastings. They also have an idyllic restaurant and whisky bar to help you enjoy their beautiful environment.
