Known to cigar aficionados as a value Montecristo, Diplomaticos was the first new brand for Cuban cigars after the cigar revolution produced for public sale.
Diplomaticos was created in 1966 specifically aimed at the french market who wanted a cigar like a Montecristo but not as strong or as expensive, which is why the blend is slightly milder but still mimics the Montecristo line of numbered sizes. The relationship between Diplomaticos and Montecristo is extremely tight, so tight that they share the same factory (Jose Marti Factory).
The original line consisted of five numbered sizes, just like Montecristo. In 1976 the No.6 and No.7 were created and were the same size as the Montecristo Especial No.1 and Especial No.1 but were discontinued a few years later.
