COHIBA
Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.
It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.
Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.
The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.
The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.
Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.
Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.
Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.
All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.
PIRAMIDES EXTRA - La Linea Classica
In 2012, the Pirámides Extra became the first cigar since 1989 to be introduced to the Cohiba Linea Clásica range. Measuring 6 ¼" (160mm) x 54 ring gauge and "torpedo" in shape, it was a totally unique vitola (size) and the first in the range to carry the newly designed cigar band incorporating additional holographic security elements. Launched in Cabinet Boîte Nature boxes of 10, they quickly become a popular addition to Cuba’s flagship brand.
Pirámides Extra fits within the Cohiba Linea Clasica blend, with a mild-to-strong taste. It’s completely rolled by hand with leaves hailing from the finest tobacco plantations of San Juan y Martinez and San Luis, in the region of Vuelta Abajo in the province of Pinar del Río in Cuba.
This cigar kicks off with sweet, fruity flavours with a slight hint of cinnamon which gives it a slight spiciness throughout. Perfectly balanced out by nuts and earth to give it a long and satisfying finish on the palette.
94 / 100
"The cigar is called Pirámides Extra because it’s a little thicker and a little longer than traditional Cuban pirámides sizes. But that little “extra” was also put into the blend, as it offers an elegant profile starting with chestnut and cinnamon to almond paste and black pepper. The underlying oakiness is a signature of the brand—Cohiba’s tobacco spends time in oak barrels during final fermentation..."
