Cohiba

The history of Cohiba is short and sweet, in the 1960s a bodyguard of Fidel Castro was smoking a cigar which caught the attention of Castro. The bodyguard let Castro try one of his cigars and instantly fell in love with them, so Castro found Eduardo Ribera, the man who made them, set up a factory (the El Laguito factory), got all the leaves and found some cigar makers to make the cigars that Castro loved so much.

The Cohiba brand was officially launched in 1968, during the first few years of production only a few thousand were produced annually. These boxes were made for high government officials and were frequently used as diplomatic gifts.

The Cohiba brand was launched as a premium cigar brand into markets outside of the USA in 1982 which also clashed with the world cup in Spain. At the time of launch Cohiba only had three vitolas: Corona Especial, Lancero and the Panetela. In 1989 three more vitolas were added: The Esplendido, the Robusto and the Exquisito.

In 1992 Habanos SA launched the first sizes in what it calls the Línea 1492, commemorating Christopher Columbus and his voyage to the Americas, with each size named for a century since Columbus' discovery. The initial launch included the Siglo I, Siglo II, Siglo III, Siglo IV, and Siglo V, with a Siglo VI added in 2002.

The newest addition to the Cohiba family is the Cohiba Piramides Extra. The most prestigious Habano brand exclusively unveiled the new Cohiba Pirámides Extra, during the 14th Habano Festival in February 2012. This is the first figurado that is now here to stay within the Cohiba brand’s Linea Clasica niche.
