Bowmore: Islay's First Licensed Distillery

In 1779 a local merchant, John Simpson established the Bowmore distillery although local knowledge suggests distilling actually started almost 10 years prior. In 1837 the Mutter family led by twins William and James purchased the distillery from the Simpson family.

After 50 years of owning the Bowmore distillery an economic depression saw the demand for whisky plummet, leading the Mutter family to sell the distillery to John Bell Sherriff of Campbeltown. Five years later the distillery was purchased by a consortium lead by Joseph Robert Holmes who named the distillery Bowmore Distillery Co. In 1925 John Bell Sherriff Purchases the Bowmore distiller once again and renames it Sherriff’s Bowmore distillery.

In 1940 Bowmore ceased production as the distillery was commandeered by RAF Coastal Command to help with the efforts during the Second World War. In 1963 The Bowmore distillery changed hands again after Stanley P Johnson purchases it from John Bell Sherriff. The Queen visited the Balmore distillery in 1980, this was her first visit to a scotch distillery and was presented with her own cask and bottles which were later sold to raise money for charity.

In 2014 Beam Suntory acquired Bowmore distillers, In a first for single malt scotch whisky, Bowmore Mizunara was released marrying the strength and passion of scotch whisky with the elegance and refinement of whisky matured in Japanese Mizunara casks.

Working with the finest quality oak casks, and a tradition that’s been passed down through generations, distillers use just three ingredients to make Bowmore single malt Scotch whisky: barley, yeast and water. It’s a process that’s been perfected over nearly 240 years. Using the soft fresh water from the nearby River Laggan, barley grown and malted on the island, painstakingly cultivated yeast, and the magnificent character of Islay all come together to create Bowmore single malt Scotch whisky.
