Curiositas uses a heavily peated malted barley as the cereal varietal to produce a unique, fresh, peated expression.
This rare single malt, from the Heartland of Speyside, has wonderful overtones of peat reek, combined cleverly with a background of fruity, floral, heathery notes with an appealing oak finish. Traditionalists believe that peated malts achieve optimum balance of peat-bittersweet and oak infusion after 10 years of maturation which makes this Benriach perfect.
Curiositas is a distinctive and welcome addition to the Speyside scene – this is a dram to be savoured with a dash of water.
Nose: An explosion of aromatic peat reek with fragrant hints of honey. Sublimely medicinal, sweet grassy asphalt and heather, also with hints of malmsey.
Palate: Sweet and heavy smoke hits you first followed by peppery spice tingles, iodine and a warm nuttiness.
Finish: Bittersweet, dry wood, creosote and phenol, and fennel, in fact.
The kind of soft malt you could wean nippers on, as opposed to curiositas, which would be kippers. Unusually for a BenRiach there is a distinct toffee-fudge air to this one late on, but not enough to spoil that butterscotch-malt charm. No colouring added, so a case of the oak being a bit naughty.
