Herman Upmann was a banker from Germany who so loved Cuban cigars that he moved to Havana in 1844 and set up as both banker and cigar maker. His bank closed in the early 1920's but his cigars live on as a fine example of an elegant, light to medium flavoured Habano.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

Tasting Notes

Very strong and pungent. A strong cigar, that burns slowly and reveals nice, complex tastes. These cigars pack a deep cuban taste into a little package for a great price.

For me this was great, very mellow and a tight draw but I did enjoy it. I didnt have any issues with the wrapper as others did. Really smooth and quite mild.

I struggled with this one, it was difficult to light, and then went out a few times. With all the relighting it didnt get to the point I was enjoying it so gave up. It gets a number of good reviews so may have been unlucky, and Im also not particularly experienced with cigars so that no doubt played a role as well.

My first of the H. Upmann range. I cant even remember smoking this which I suppose is both a good and bad thing. On that note, this would probably make a great introductory cigar or as an alternative to when its the only thing available? I will probably try more in the range at a later date...

I received this cigar as part of a sampler. Found this to be quite a frustrating smoke, the cigar was very tightly packed and almost impossible to draw from. it seemed to be very mild but there was so little smoke I feel my experience is not the norm given other reviews. Wrapper also began to come apart around half way down the stick. I gave up at 2/3. I guess i was just unlucky with this example.

Having recently tried the Upmann Junior which was a wonderful smoke, (ordered a pack of three based on my first experiance) I thought I would give the Minor a try, it was disappointing out of the tube as I was met with a small split of about 3mm in the end of the cigar, after lighting things didn't get any better. The draw was very tight, no flavour to speak of, it went out twice, uneven burn, when it got down to the last third, the wrapper started to laminate quite badly, at that point I gave up. Obviously I received a poor example reading some of the reviews on here, I may try another one in the future, but as I have placed an order for a number of other singles to try, it might be a long time before I give the Upmann Minor another go.
