Tomatin Five Virtues Limited Release Whisky Collection - 5x70cl

Since 1897, renowned distillery, Tomatin have been combining soft mountain water with tender local barley, introducing it to tall copper stills and - following years of maturation in oak casks - collecting the mellow, fruity spirit. 

This symbiosis - the ‘Five Virtues’ - is a concept synonymous with the age-old processes and materials employed by our distillery men. Water feeds wood; wood sustains fire; fire gives life to earth; earth yields metal; metal gathers water; and the cycle continues…

To celebrate the Five Virtues, leading artist, Eva Ullrich, has explored these interactions and their role in whisky production. The result is five striking artworks…and five unique expressions.

All five expressions are now available and we're making it that much easier, combining all five in one exclusive and limited edition collection. 

Tomatin Five Virtues Wood:

The first, and most significant, virtue in the production cycle is embodied in this edition by the use of carefully selected French, American and Hungarian oak casks during maturation, representative of the many varieties of the 177,000 casks held in a number of 14 warehouses.

Tomatin Five Virtues Fire:

The second phase of the cycle is exhibited through maturation of this edition in heavily charred oak casks which, having been fired before previous use, were stripped then re-fired stimulating new, fresh vanilla flavours.

Tomatin Five Virtues Earth:

The third virtue, Earth, is exemplified in an edition rich in intense and - unusually for Tomatin - peaty flavours. A consequence of maturing whisky made with peat-dried malted barley in refill Hogshead casks.

Tomatin Five Virtues Metal: 

Metal, the fourth phase of the cycle - is expressed by 12 beautiful copper stills, which produce a pure spirit that, for this distinctive edition, is matured in classic first fill Bourbon barrels.

Tomatin Five Virtues Water:

This fifth and final edition is their Water expression, represented by naturally pure soft Water from the Alt-na-Frith burn. Drawn year-round, this edition deliberately employs winter-distilled spirit where reduced contact with copper stills enriches the final flavour.

The Five Virtues Series does not carry an age statement, however Tomatin aim to be as open and transparent as they are allowed to be under EU law.

Tomatin Five Virtues Wood:

Nose: Complex and round, oaky spices with a warming toasted undertone.
Palate: Brown sugar, orange peel, soft vanilla and oaky spice; like a perfectly balanced old fashioned.
Finish: Long and round with rich spice.

Tomatin Five Virtues Fire:

Nose: Creamy butterscotch with citrus and winter spices.
Palate: Sweet apple pie with a light dusting of cinnamon.
Finish: Slightly dry with a delicate spicy finish.

Tomatin Five Virtues Earth:

Nose: An intriguing mix of vanilla, burning heather and black fruits with sweet light smoke.
Palate: Unlike any other Tomatin, a salty smokiness with burnt honey and kelp.
Finish: Complex and ever-changing; smoky and sweet:

Tomatin Five Virtues Metal:

Nose: Soft and creamy with vanilla notes. A hint of sweetness soon presents itself from chocolate and Macadamia nuts.
Palate: Citrus notes come to the forefront with sweet spices.
Finish: Typically Tomatin; soft, sweet and light.

Tomatin Five Virtues Water:

Nose: Mature fruity flavours with chocolate honeycomb.
Palate: Rich toffee and marzipan with blood orange marmalade.
Finish: Warming with a long and oily finish.
