Description Ref # NRNavyFlake

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

Then in 2015, the two companies returned back together under one roof.

Tasting Notes

The idea of Navy flakes heeds back to the early colonial days of the tobacco world. Back in those days tobacco would be brought back from foreign countries such as American and was soaked in Rum to keep the tobacco from drying out.

This simple blending has been used ever since to add a little something special to a simple blend. While most current Navy Flakes are comprised of only Virginia’s, this offering from Samuel Gawith make use of a little Latakia.

Once you open the tin you are greeted with a brown and black flake, medium in thickness. The aroma rewards your senses with notes of grassy plains with a tangy Virginia taste. The added bonus of the rum bringing a little sweetness while the Latakia making a creamy and smooth smoke.

Shockingly bad flake . Difficult to rub out to any degree , takes a monumental time to dry out and even when it has , it is even more of a chore keeping it lit. If there are any hints of rum and Latakia , i can't taste it, in fact it is very bland .

Somebody kindly posted a message to me on this forum that Samuel Gawith flakes are always very moist and should be dried out before attempting to smoke them. With that in mind I took out a couple of flakes, rubbed them down to something that I thought resembled rubbed tobacco and then left them to dry for 3 hours and certainly appeared to be less moist. The dry notes of this tobacco are a very strong scent of alcohol (I dont believe this scent is near the sweetness of rum, closer to a whisky scent) and a strange, almost plastic note in there which threw me a bit. The tobacco notes were strong, I believe this may be Latakia as it is quite a bot stronger and bolder than the other tobaccos that Ive tried. I put it in my Peterson straight pipe (with a filter) and, after a bit of difficulty on the initial light, eventually got the pipe going. The tobacco smoked really well after the initial lighting stages, although it did go out on me unexpectedly once (two thirds of the way down) and again at the end. The smoke was quite strong, but certainly was more to my liking given my preference to darker, more full bodied cigars. The taste was a pleasant tobacco, full bodied but not harsh in any way, the alcohol didnt come through much in the taste but there was a slightly bitter note of cocoa, which I found very pleasant. The smoke was smooth and did not produce any bite at all during the smoke. The smoke output was pretty thick, I could follow it all the way up to the roof and the room scent was quite strong. Im not convinced that a non-smoking partner would tolerate this one at all. As I said the pipe went out once unexpectedly as it smoked away very nicely with minimal amount of effort. The sign that I noticed the burn was dying straight away was that I got the plasticy/rubbery note from the pre-light scent in the taste. But after a tamping down and a relight I was back enjoying this tobacco. I filled the bowl three quarters full and the smoke lasted 50 minutes. One final thing to note: 50 minutes after smoking and the lingering taste in my mouth is rather strong, but not bitter or unpleasant. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this tobacco and I could easily see it becoming my regular pipe tobacco.
