Description

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

Then in 2015, the two companies returned back together under one roof.

The Samuel Gawith Plug Tobacco comes in an un-prepared plug form. Plug blocks are cut from a cake, which is produced by fermenting tobacco leaves under immense pressure.

A plug requires slicing and rubbing to prepare it for smoking. Leaving large slices or chunks will reduce the burn rate whilst thinner slices will provide a faster more intense burn.

Due to the added fermentation process, plug tends to be full bodied and would only be recommended for the experienced smoker.

Tasting Notes

Another one of iconic flakes from Samuel Gawith, 1792 is a dark fired Tanzanian leaf which has been steamed and then topped with a Tonquin flavour.

The leaves are cold pressed in 12" blocks for a few hours, this holds the "Cake" together for the next stage. Once the leaves have cooled they are pressed again and then put in for a final cook for 3 hours, before they are finally left to rest. The tobacco is then given its Tonquin topping and cutting into smaller flakes.

The resulting tobacco is rich, with an earthyand leather flavour that is velvety smooth with a sweet side thanks to the added Tonquin.

Think of this as a sweet treat for the lovers of a dark and strong Virginia & Kentucky type tobaccos.

Just like a premium quality Nicaraguan cigar with a Maduro Wrapper, you get all the power with that added extra sweetness.

This is a very strong tobacco and not for everyone, those new to the pipe, should start a little lighter.
