It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.
In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.
In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.
The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.
Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.
Then in 2015, the two companies returned back together under one roof.
Samuel Gawith's Cabbie's Mixture is a beautiful roll cut of finest Virginia with 6% Louisiana Perique woven into the middle.
Roll cut tobaccos are produced by spinning tobacco leaves into twists. These twists are further enhanced by pressing and cooking. Once the rope is ready, after a long and elegant process, it is sliced into convenient discs that are also known as roll cuts.
To prepare for smoking, a little rubbing of the coils will loosen the tobacco, which can then be packed into your pipe.
This is a traditional style of tobacco leaving you to experience the sweetness from the Virginia and fruitiness from the Perique.
No additional flavouring necessary!
Please note: Pipe used is for illustration purposes only.

As you open the tin, you are greeted with freshness and comfort. The smells of leather are present mixed with a gentle fruitiness from the familiar brightness of Virginia.
The coils are pleasing to the eye with its contrasting golden browns and dark browns, swirling in a whirlpool with eddies of yellow.
The select Virginias have a sweetness about them that's gentle, almost reminding you of grassy meadows or freshly cut hay. The Perique gives dark fruit tones of black cherries and plums.
As you continue to smoke and enjoy these flavours they caramelise towards the end of the bowl, giving a deeper sweetness that's a little more subtle than before, with cocoa hints and a faint roasted nuttiness.
Cabbie's Mixture is a delight that will burn long and cool. The tobacco is mild, giving you no tongue bite and leaving you to palate all that is present.
It would make an ideal postprandial treat, or serve as an all-day smoke.
This tobacco is a perfect candidate to be aged, though it is very agreeable straight from a new tin.
