Ron Barcelo Imperial is the first Dominican Rum that I've had the pleasure of trying. I have to say, I'm very impressed. The first thing you notice is this bottles unusual, but elegant shape. This will definitely be kept once finished. As I popped the top off and took a sniff I was greeted by many pleasant smells. Rich cream, glacé cherries, mixed nuts and also some oak. I poured a sizeable glass and sat back swirling it for a few seconds, room temperature and neat as had been suggested to me. This was certainly the correct choice, as I was utterly blown away by the magnificent flavours. Sweet stewed fruits, brown sugar and vanilla, roast chestnuts and then a nice heat. I was amazed by the smoothness of this delicious Rum. The heat does not over stay it's welcome, slowly finishing with those same sweet flavours of boiled fruits and vanilla. I also tasted the American oak and hints of cigar leaves.
This is certainly up there with the best Rum I have ever had the pleasure of sampling, and has opened my eyes to a market of Dominican Rum which I had never even considered before.
