Named after William Shakespeare's tragic lovers, the origins of Romeo y Julieta as a Habano date back to 1875.

The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th Century under the direction of Don 'Pepin' Rodriguez, a talented promoter, who was amongst the first to recognise the power of the cigar band. During his hey day no less than 20,000 different bands were used in production.

Winston Churchill became a devotee of the brand. Following his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band but it has also served to describe the marque's most famous size - Romeo y Julieta Churchill.

The 21st century has seen the arrival of two additional sizes using the name. The first called Short Churchill, a robusto size that had been missing from the range, was added in 2006. The second launched as the 21st Festival del Habano in 2010, was Wide Churchills, which boasts a 55 ring gauge to mark the trend amongst enthusiasts for stouter girth vitolas.

Romeo y Julieta's balanced and aromatic blend of selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone make it the classic medium bodied Habano.

Today Romeo y Julieta is well known around the world as ever and offers the widest range of long filler sizes in any Habano brand.

Tasting Notes

An easy drawing, medium flavour, light strength cigar that is sweet in taste from the first to the last puff.

"...A flat-headed robusto with a healthy-looking, medium claro wrapper. Floral at first, this cigar becomes earthy and spicy with big notes of walnut and a bit of maple syrup..."

Initial problems with the outer wrapper. Was split at the lighting end, and split at the mouth end when I made the cut. Managed to smoke it besides, and it ended up a great smoke despite the wrapper problems. Easy draw. Enjoyed it with an Admiral Rodney rum from St. Lucia. Not too strong, not too weak. Leathery and peppery and creamy smoke. Real Cuban flavour. Getting cocoa and chocolatey notes which worked with the Caribbean rum. Uneven burn that needed touching up with my Colibri lighter. Despite the wrapper issues it was a great smoke - would not stop me from trying the Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill Cigar again. The draw was superlative throughout. I really struggle with a tight draw.

Picked up a box of 10 today from Turmeaus Chester. Couldnít wait so took one out this evening. Recently Iíve been smoking H. Upmann Half Coronaís and a couple of Cohiba Siglo IIís. This cigar is just beautiful. The effortless draw is the first thing that pleases, I just love it when you donít have to fight a cigar. The burn is perfectly even. The 1st third had light, chocolatey flavours with the coolest taste. The middle was more heavy with complexity and the end didnít disappoint with all the classic flavours expected from Romeoís. 10/10 - loved it and if the rest are just as nice I think Iíll be getting another box in a month or two. Also to note, the team in Chester were fantastic as always, a pleasure to deal with. Thanks Team.

Donít know if I had a duff one but my last one was not good. I cut it as per usual fashion taking care with the cap not too short. The wrapper unraveling came as a surprise and it was only the band that kept it totally destroying itself. The taste was ruined and I gave up on it Ö.. expensive cigar to binÖ.

Great construction and burn. Lovely draw. Sweet wood and black pepper, then becomes more creamy with a floral perfume like finish. Towards the end becomes more floral. Not to my taste compared to other Cubans but a pleasant experience overall.
