Regius Connecticut with my usual V cut, paired with a cup of Russian Caravan tea.

This started very pleasantly with light leather and nutty flavours, although I should confess I was grazing on nuts and dried fruit at the time, so my tastebuds may have been receiving outside assistance. The first half felt particularly fresh and mild, with more pepper beginning to appear as I moved into the second half.

The burn was essentially even. It wandered by perhaps a millimetre here and there but always corrected itself without intervention. It did go out around halfway and needed a relight, although I am a notoriously slow smoker and still managed to get a full hour from it.

Interestingly, I had not really noticed a slight bitterness until I ate some chocolate halfway through. The sweetness transformed the experience and gave the cigar something it had been missing. I do not drink alcohol, but I could easily imagine a good sweet rum working beautifully here and bringing out some of the subtler flavours that my tea did not quite manage.

It did not produce particularly long ash, but the construction otherwise felt solid and the draw was good throughout.

Would I call it remarkable? Probably not. But I think that slightly misses what this cigar does well. It is light and restrained enough to act almost as a canvas for whatever you pair with it. Different teas, chocolate, dried fruit or, for those who drink, something sweeter could each pull the cigar in a different direction.

For the seasoned enthusiast looking for something complex and commanding, it may not quite hit the spot. But as an easy, versatile smoke that invites a bit of experimentation, there is actually quite a lot to like.
