You cannot get any better than Oliva at the moment! Look at the high profile awards that they have collected in the last 3 months:-
- Oliva V Melanio Figuarado just been awarded the No1 Cigar of the Year by the Cigar Aficionado blind test panel. - The Oliva V Melanio Double Toro was ranked number 5 cigar of 2014 by the Cigar Journal. - Oliva were presented with the UK Cigar Producer of the Year in 2014 by the Spectator Cigar Awards in November in London.
Mitchell underwent a rigorous sampling exercise in the summer of 2014 to carefully select the blend and create a stylish design using the award winning Serie V Melanio as his inspiration.
The cigars are boxed in 10’s and blend consists of an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, with a Nicaraguan filler and binder.
A little bit of background to Oliva...
The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.
As with so many cigar stories, Gilberto Oliva Sr. faced a difficult road. He left his native Cuba in 1964, and eventually started working for the Plasencia family in Honduras. In 1995 he and his son Gilberto Jr. created a cigar within Plasencia’s factory called Gilberto Oliva. A year later, they set out to open a factory of their own, and shortened their brand name to Oliva.
Business was tough in those days, and Oliva struggled. Faced with dwindling reserves of cash, in a cost-cutting move they turned to Gilberto Sr.’s robust stocks of Nicaraguan tobacco, which changed the flavour profile of Oliva cigars at a time when the interest in Nicaraguan flavour was increasing.
Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.
Oliva is one of the best nicaraguan cigars on the market with lots of awards and it's also famous for excellent quality tobacco.
Made exclusive for us, Oliva Orchant selection Cigar range is available in 3 different sizes exclusive to C.Gars Ltd.
Today I am sampling the Chubby guy of the selection which is exactly his name, Oliva Chubby with 4” length x 60 ring gauge. A very popular size in the UK.
We tried to make this cigar especially for all the Havana smokers; Even if they are constructed in Nicaragua you will find them very close to the Cuban Palate.
The presentation is lovely, boxed in 10’ with a nice construction composed by Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper as the Oliva V Melanio series, the most exclusive and selected line made by Oliva, and Nicaraguan binder and fillers.
I would like to advise our customers to use a big blade cutter, something shorter than 56-60 ring blade can damage the cigar.
This Chubby begins very sweet, woody with a few notes of white pepper on the palate.
The cigar is leaving a very rich medium strength sweet smoke which reminds me of a delicious cup of milky coffee in the mornings.
Finally ends with a lovely creamy taste and a very well balance peppery notes on the palate.
Gorgeous, the draw was perfect during the whole smoke.

I have just smoked this while on a windy walk with the dog, so no coffee or beer. I too found it one dimensional, however I really enjoyed it. It had easy draw, good feel and burned really well.
I would happily buy again.

Love these! Very smooth and sweet but not too sweet, like a creamy vanilla flavour! Great construction & all round burn. Always a pleasant aroma - really want to buy a box & age them but ahhh cash is always the problem... have to dig deep this winter and buy them for next year!
I've had the shorty and the fatty, both very good cigars but the fatty just feels so right in the hand, very manly and macho, you know?
Brilliant work, I will BUY A BOX, I MUST HAVE ONE!

Beautiful cigars, good fat and full of flavour. I like leaving these for a while 5-6 months and they are great I never buy a box of these but I really should.... Flavour wise I get nice sweet woody notes and with hints of spice. I have these normally with a Nicaraguan coffee and they go hand in hand.

I really enjoyed this cigar, despite it being a bit one dimensional. Leathery was the main taste I got. Very smooth. It's a shame that it is priced in the same territory as Cuban petit coronas and marevas which are way ahead. Drop the price a few quid and it might be worth keeping a few in the humidor
