    MONTECRISTO

Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Havanas throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Havana smokers against which other brands are judged.

The name comes from Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’, which was a firm favourite when read to the Torcedores (cigar rollers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935.

The original Montecristo range of sizes was composed of a narrow assortment numbered from 1 to 5. Today it consists of a wide variety of vitolas to cover every level of the cigar enthusiast’s needs.

Whether it is within the classic medium-to-full line, the lighter Open Series or the newer, more powerful, Linea 1935, Montecristo’s perfectly balanced blends are all created exclusively with selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone, home of the finest tobaccos in the world.

    OPEN J

The smallest of the open series. The J takes the form of a rare vitola previously only found in the Le Hoyo Series (du Depute). A perfect morning or aperitif smoke.

  • A small cigar perfect for lighting up when time is short. This size is produced for only one other Habanos, Hoyo de Monterrey, where it is called Le Hoyo du Depute. Enjoy its delicate flavour for around twenty minutes.

Reviews

Customers say
Customers generally find the Montecristo Open J to be a pleasant, mild, and smooth smoke, often praised for its consistent burn and good construction. While many enjoy its developing flavors and suitability for shorter smoking times, some reviewers note a lack of complexity and find the price a bit high for what it offers, occasionally experiencing a tight draw or blandness.
Ideal for those seeking a milder, shorter Cuban cigar experience, especially for outdoor enjoyment or as an introduction to the Montecristo brand, but be aware that some find it less complex than other Montecristo offerings.

I suppose that my first impressions is that the Open J is a bit of a disappointment, but thats not really so. In fact it is a perfectly good cigar, its just I had expected a little bit more from it. My comments would be that the draw was really good, it lit well, burned evenly, held its ash well and the construction was very good. However I think its a little bit one dimensional and a No-5 thats aged a little, is easily as good, if a little milder. its a cigar that whilst I enjoyed, it did not challenge me to think about its complexity, simply because it doesnt have much of one.

My first of the open series. I bought 5 because my local shop was out of Upmanns half coronas which are my usual walking cigars. Quick burning with a loose draw but not unpleasant. Obviously designed as a quick smoke with reasonable construction and a light version of the classic montecristo taste. Another reviewer said they got 40-50 mins out of it and honestly I dont know how thats possible. It was 20 mins for me keeping the Ash nice and flat. Good for short walks but honestly the price is too high. It may be Cuban but its not a good example. Look to the Trinidad Reyes or the upmann half corona in the same price bracket.

I don't have much to compare this to, but it was a very enjoyable smoke; lasting around 40-50 minutes. Fairly mild smooth smoke, not sure I could pick up much in the way of distinct flavours, except maybe some almonds (marzipan) about 2/3's in but that faded quite quickly and was replaced with straight tobacco taste.

Just finished smoking this cigar which was a very fine smoke all the way until the end when it got a bit hot. Nevertheless, I'll be buying this one again.
