San Cristobal de la Habana was the original name of Havana, Cuba's capital city, when it was founded in 1519; San Cristobal (St Christopher) in honour of the Saint of the day where the city was founded, and La Habana after an Indian name for the site.

San Cristobal de la Habana cigars were introduced in 1999 on the threshold of the new Millennium as a tribute to the city's long history.

At first the range comprised just four vitolas, each names after one of the fortresses built from the 16th to the 18th Centuries that defended Havana when it was the hub of Spain's American empire. These are: El Morro, La Fuerza, La Punta and El Principe.

La Casa del Habano, as the franchise network of Habanos S.A. is called, comprises more than 150 tobacco shops specializing in Habanos worldwide. Each one guarantees the best possible service as well as a wide selection of Habanos of different brands and vitolas as well as walk-in humidors with ideal temperature and humidity conditions.

Several productions are exclusively reserved for the La Casa del Habano shops, such as the Colección Habanos and Replica Antigua humidors as well as unique vitolas for certain Habano brands. We are lucky to have two La Casa del Habano franchises, one in Chester and one in Knutsford. This allows us to offer you the full range to C.Gars customers online.

I was a little dissappointed with this cigar, as the one I smoked took a while to get going. There was little initial flavour with a hard draw, and only really started to develop after half of it had been smoked. The second half was as expected, with rich flavour although the experience was tarnished by the poor start. I will try another again, as I am hoping this was a one-off dud, and my previous smokes from San Cristobal have been great.

Milk chocolate colour wrapper, lightly veined, double banded and firmly built resulting in a firm draw. It lit well and gave soft wood smoke with leather and cafe creme flavour for the first third, mild but with satisfying depth. The cedar notes continued into the second third with increasing spice and an even burn producing a resolute ash that finally succumbed to gravity at a good inch and a half. The early promise continued through to the final third, still soft and cool, wood, leather, coffee and spice with no bitterness. This cigar is definitely on my reorder list for those occasions that call for refinement and subtlety rather than gusto and largesse. I hope the next is as good as this.
