The Karuizawa distillery was established in 1955 in the foothills of Mt. Asama, an active volcano.
Traditional, small-scale and high quality production is the aim, with wooden wash backs, small stills and sherry casks from Spain all contributing to the process.
The environment is also ideal for whisky production with low temperatures and high humidity.
Karuizawa Single Malts have won gold medals at IWSC and ISC testing competitions.
This Karuizawa is a fine blend of the finest single malts from Karuizawa distillery, bottled at cask strength from a sherry butt, this 4th release is a non chill-filtered whisky meaning the whisky retains original colour, taste and aromas.
Less savoury and earthy compared to the 3rd release, but both expressions are sweet and fruity with blueberry jam, figs and hints of vegetal notes as well as candied ginger and sudachi (a Japanese citrus fruit).
The 4th release stays safely in sweeter territories (prune juice, rum-raisin cake, mince pies), which is nice and makes for an easy drinking experience.
