Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

Hoyo de Monterrey was the first brand to introduce a Petit Robusto in 2005, the 50 ring gauge size with a shorter length to suit those who like thicker formats, but do not always have the time to enjoy them.

Tasting Notes

A fairly new addition to the Hoyo range. It was added to the brand in 2004 and was probably one of the best new cigars produced in that year. Full of flavour, spice, rich and sweet. The cigar lasts around 40 minutes and have a great flavour and complexity. Definitely a cigar to be smoked with at least 6 months age.

"...While there was some inconsistency noted in the draw and combustion, this short cigar is salty and nutty with intermittent notes of orange peel, grass and dry woods..."

I love these - I always have a pack of three with almost every order. Its a lovely smoke mild and creamy. This one had a perfect draw not too free and not too tight. Burned very well. A great cigar when you dont have the time for an Epicure no. 2

When it comes to cigars this is my weapon of choice. Great draw, well constructed, blows smoke like the great Orient Express - light, plesant and sweet. Never fails. Just ashed myself as I wrote this and burnt a hole in my shorts an inch from my groin - be careful out there.

Great little cigar! A little pricy but it is a cuban. Lasted about 40 mins which i was surprised about. The burn was a little uneven and the ash was quite flakey. That said, nice and smooth with light woody notes throughout. Nothing to write home about in complexity but a great smoke for beginners and someone liking a lighter taste, no pepper or bitterness. Very good drew and smoke output. Great for weddings where you dont want to be nursing a 2 hour double toro haha!

I guess you would say that I am a seasonal cigar smoker, that is to say, that I don’t smoke every day and ususally only outside in the summer. So after my winter cigar hibernation,(from which I emerge maybe once on New Year’s Eve for a rather chilly herf huddled around the patio heater), I like to start off the season by aclimatising my pallate with a milder cigar, usually an HdM Epicure No.2. My enjoyment of cigars is usually curtailed by the weather conditions and my ability to sit still and enjoy a cigar without the cold making it a more rushed experience than I would like. After an unusually stunning summer here in the UK and some wonderfully relaxing herfing while in France, the last few weeks of wet and dreary weather had left me hankering for a cigar. Today’s conditions were as perfect as we are likely to get for some time, so suitably attired, I headed out to the garden with an relatively mild espresso, a tot of Havana Club Especial and a petit robusto. As with most HdM cigars, the construction is very good, with lovely matte oily wrapper starting to develop after a little over a year in the humidor and near perfect assembly around the cap area. After punching it with a wide punch, I tested the draw, which seemed to offer just the right amount of resistance. Pre lighting aromas were of hay, cedar and sweet spices and were quite pronounced. Slowly toasting the foot with a triple flame, got it lit easily and the first draw was a delight. Lots of lovely creamy smoke with a sweetness that tingled on the tongue. Nuts, hay, coffee and spice seem to be the order of the day, in a package that is to my mind slightly stronger in body than an Epicure No.2, developing a little about halfway through, to be a little earthier. A very enjoyable smoke and one which I found hard to tear myself away from, even though I had begun to burn my fingers on the remains. As far as I am concerned, every cigar should be an experience and I am hard pushed to find a reason I have not tried this little gem before, as a very pleasant experience it was. Lasting a full 50 mins (the way I smoke ‘em) it belies it size by offering a lot in a small package. The only negative is that it canoed a bit, but I find that with many other cigars, so I can recommend this cigar highly.

Bought a bunch of these for my wedding, to be shared with cigar aficionados and new smokers. I wanted to give everyone the feel of a real gauge cigar without the epic smoke length or more complex flab out profile of a more enthusiast cigar, and these fit the bill perfectly. A real crowd pleaser! As a Cohiba smoker myself these offered an interesting alternative and Ill certainly look at buying some more for barbecues and social events in future.
