HOYO DE MONETERREY

Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

The brand is renowned for its Double Corona and for the prestigious Epicure series, the No.1 and No.2, to which the longer Epicure Especial was added in 2008. There is also a range of vitolas known as the Le Hoyo Series. These are generally accepted to be slightly stronger and spicier than the brand’s classic range.

All sizes are ‘tripalarga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade using filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone.

HERMOSOS NO. 4 ANEJADOS

Close in size to the ever popular Epicure No. 2, this is an enjoyable alternative for fans of the Hoyo brand and all loers of lighter blends.

Tasting Notes

This is everything I love about milder cigars: easy smoking but full of complexity. Slightly unexpected notes of pepper and leather are present throughout with bittersweet dark chocolate popping up towards the end. Good clean finish means it's ideal for a daytime smoke, but you might be tempted to light another one as soon as you finish!

They're slightly more full bodied than your average Hoyo, but very approachable. Without question my favourite Hoyo to date and a reminder of why 2007 is generally seen as one of the better recent years. Highly recommended!

Perfect drew and razer straight burn from beginning to burnt fingers, without relighting for 50 minutes... nice spicy creamy sweet cedar thats beautifully aged and marries well with Metaxa 12 Having said this there are better cigars particularly if you keep them in your humidor for a few years; although for £20 reasonable value and much better than twice the value of many cigars priced at £10 and a well aged cigar in my opinion is always a very nice luxury, so will probably buy a few again and would give under four stars but is definitely worth much more than three so is a four star revew or 88/100

Don’t even bother!! Unless one dimensional Cuban Tobaco is your thing. No changes whatsoever. I got a faint hint of cedar and a tinge of spice but it comes and goes. It didn’t take me anywhere or leave me wanting more. Very very disappointing from what is said to be an aged cigar. Construction was good and combustion also. The aroma wasn’t the worst I’ve experienced but none the less, quite unpleasant. Hands down, the worst hoyo I’ve ever had but hey, you live and you learn!

The construction is very good, but didn’t seem to quite hit the Epicure 2 standards and looked lightly box pressed. Unlit aroma was Hay, barnyard, vanilla sweetness. Once punched it was easy to light and burned fairly evenly the whole way through. The first draw was not what I was expecting, predominantly hay/grass, woodiness and maybe some waxiness. As I got into the 1st third it gave way to spiciness and a hint of smokiness, but still a little waxy with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Smoke production was not a creamy as I have seen in other HDMs. The 2nd third was more of a revelation, with far more spiciness, not sweet, but more smokey/woody, with a leathery finish maybe some vanilla creeping in. Later in the 2nd third and continuing into the last third, it became sweeter and the smoke became fuller, with a sweeter leather aftertaste and spice being very much in the forefront. Altogether a much nicer cigar as we move into the 2nd and last third much more like a good HDM than the start, which was beginning to frustrate me in its lack or smoothness or production of smoke. All in all, a reasonable cigar, but I had expected more from a certified aged cigar and was left feeling that it was so nearly right, but missed the mark, not by much, but as there are so many other wonderful cigars to choose from the competition demands more. I have another 7 to smoke, so lets see if they improve in the humidor.

Now it's a bit odd reviewing this Anjedos cigar because I haven't tried the normal version yet. So for what it is worth I will have a go. I have tried a number of big named Anjedos cigars and have, in general, been fairly underwhelmed. But I bring good news, I loved this one! It was all one would hope for in an aged cigar; delicate, complex, soft on the palate with a unique mix of tastes which are very pleasant indeed. On initial inspection I was a little worried as the cigar seemed very soft, perhaps under filled or over humidified. But I am not an expert on Hoyos and the cigar smoked delightfully so maybe this is a general characteristic. We shall see because I am definitely going to buy more of these on my return to England. One thing I really liked was the maturation of any cedar notes that I assume are present in the younger cigars. It wasn't that the Cedar was prominent, far from it! It was as if the young cedar had matured into something not so easy to grasp; a willow the whisp or Elfine like, enchanting and magical. Before I go too far..... Just try one and see where it takes you.
