    HOYO DE MONETERREY

Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

The brand is renowned for its Double Corona and for the prestigious Epicure series, the No.1 and No.2, to which the longer Epicure Especial was added in 2008. There is also a range of vitolas known as the Le Hoyo Series. These are generally accepted to be slightly stronger and spicier than the brand’s classic range.

All sizes are ‘tripalarga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade using filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone.

    DOUBLE CORONAS

A mighty cigar with a surprisingly subtle and creamy flavour. It rocketed to stardom when the second issue of Cigar Aficionado rated a late '80s example 99 out of 100. Still a cigar to be reckoned with.

  • Excellent, oily, robust and with powerful flavour and aroma. This is a great smoke. The draw, burn and taste are very good.

"Floral at first, this long cigar draws and burns evenly. It soon develops creamy notes of almond and vanilla, a bit of caramel and a spicy burst of cinnamon. The finish smacks of honey. Complex and sophisticated..."

Reviews

Customers say
Customers generally find this Hoyo de Monterrey Double Coronas to be a smooth, rich, and complex cigar, often praised for its creamy flavor profile and long smoking time, making it ideal for relaxing occasions. While many enjoy its consistent burn and draw, a notable number of reviewers have experienced issues with tight draws or plugged cigars, and some emphasize the importance of aging to fully appreciate its potential.
Best suited for experienced smokers who appreciate a long, complex, medium-bodied smoke and are willing to age their cigars for optimal flavor, or for those seeking a special occasion cigar.

I cant imagine why anyone would smoke a cuban cigar that hasnt been aged at least 2 years, and if you age this one 2 or more years, your reward will be substantial. Its smooth, creamy, and mellow, getting richer as it burns, not harsher. When its well made, its a work of art. written by Antoine

Really nice, long smoke. Started it in the afternoon with a coffee. It was very smooth and mild, not too much smoke, very creamy almost. Put it out after an hour with just under two thirds remaining. Sparked it up again later that evening and it matured very nicely with a touch more spicyness and earthy notes. Highly recommended as a good two and a half hour smoke! written by David M Smith

When these are on, theyre on. Earthy, leathery and slightly spicy medium bodied smokes. The draw can be tight as with most longer Havanas and unfortunately these have a history of occasionally being plugged. However, if you get one thats not youve got a jewel of a smoke. written by The Mantis

I agree with mmeadows and Dov. I have had these aged well and they were strong and creamy, without the harshe bite. I have had some young and they were not very enjoyable. Another risk is that they are plugged and end up being tossed. Be finicky when you pick them, unless you get them from this site. (they are good at picking smokable sticks) written by Max

Dont short yourself by smoking one young. These are quite complex and benefit greatly to aging. They take full advantage of the size. written by mmeadows
