  • The Story of Henri Wintermans

Henri Wintermans began his cigar-making journey more than a century ago.

Born in 1886 in the Dutch village of Duizel, Henri grew up in comfortable surroundings until tragedy struck. At just 15, following the sudden death of his mother, he and his eight siblings were left destitute. Forced to leave school, Henri found work rolling cigars - a craft in which he quickly excelled.

By the age of 18, Henri and his brother Sjaak opened their first cigar factory, naming it A. Wintermans & Sons in honour of their father. With Sjaak driving sales and Henri focused on sourcing tobacco and perfecting blends, the business flourished, even as many other cigar makers struggled.

In 1934, the brothers chose to part ways. Henri moved his share of the business to Eersel - still home to the brand today - and brought in his son Adriaan, then the same age Henri had been when he started, to help expand into the booming export market. It was here that the Henri Wintermans brand was born.

Adriaan officially took over in 1945, though Henri remained a familiar figure at the factory until his death in 1975 at the age of 89. The company continued to grow, and by the dawn of the new millennium was producing more than one billion cigars annually. Today, Henri Wintermans cigars are enjoyed in over 100 countries, making the brand one of the world’s leading cigar names.

To celebrate this heritage and the pioneering spirit of its founder, the famous Red Range has been rebranded as Henri Wintermans Founder’s Blend. The name has evolved, but the cigars remain the same - crafted from the finest Cuban, Indonesian, and Brazilian tobaccos, blended with the expertise perfected over generations.

Cigar started off very sweet, soothing and mild, however, about half way through it started to get slightly bitter but then went back to being sweet again. For a low budget and quick cigar I think this Wintermans will be one of my gotos but I would suggest trying some others too. 4 stars for the slight change in taste.

Looking at some of the reviews on this cigar, I honestly struggle to think I smoked the same one!! Personally I thought this was the worst cigar Ive smoked!! Ive not got a big cigar budget, normally between £5-10 per cigar, so by no means am I trying to hold this cigar up to your big name Cubans. Compared to the other cigars Ive tried, conquistador, la invicta, Flor de Oliva ect, this was just nasty, only got about 1/3 through and had to ditch it. There are a lot better options in this price range.

If you want a cheap cigar these are fine, but if you want something decent in my opinion you need to spend a bit more. The burn was quick and hot, for the price give it a try but donÂ’t expect to much.

This cigar is quite interesting. It has a number of benefits - 1. Its dry cured so it doesnt need a humidor, though like any dry cured cigar it tastes a bit better IMO after proper humidification. 2. Its pre-cut so it can be smoked anywhere at any time. 3. Its quite a decent ring gauge and length - just shy of a petit corona. It certainly feels like a real cigar rather than a cigarillo like a half corona from Henri Wintermans. 4. It burns well and lights very easily - never had an issue with it burning in strange ways. 5. It comes in a tube despite being sold for less than a fiver, whereas its Cuban competitor Guantanamera is a good few pounds more for a tubos. The tube means it can be stored and protected anywhere. The main con - It tastes like a Henri Winterman i.e. relatively cheap, Dutch tobacco. I happen to like the flavour so its not a con for me, but if you like the flavour of Cuban or Nicaraguan tobacco and just cant stand the Dutch mix of Brazilian and Indonesian leaf it wont be for you. I think this is excellent value for a cigar and it is very useful for keeping in a car or drawer or somewhere, or anywhere you would rely on something dry cured. You get a lot of cigar for your money, but I dont think it should be compared to a real cigar e.g. a nice bundle Nicaraguan or something, it has a different niche altogether. Main competitors I know of - Guantanamera Cristales tubos Vasco da Gama (unflavoured) tubos Villiger tubos (forgot the name) Anything from De Olifant CGars own-brand of Dutch cigars And decent sized dry cured cigars like: Villiger Export (square or round) Henri Winterman Half Corona King Edward Imperial (though these are sweetened)

Easy light, even burn and nice draw. Thats it. Cheap looking nasty wrapper with tonnes of veins and knots in it. Its a cheap smoke for a reason. After one third it tasted like a damp ashtray. Full of tarry flavours and absolutely zero subtlety. I didnt get much further down it because simply put it was horrible. After I put it out I opened it up out of curiosity and I wasnt shocked. Yes its short fill tobacco but thats no excuse for it to look like left over leaves after an autumn sweep up. Considering the other smokes available for a few quid more there really isnt any other reason to buy this other than you cant get to a decent tobacconist or wait on delivery. Save your money ladies and gents as youd be better off wrapping guinea pig bedding in your fiver and smoking that than buying this monstrosity! Chris
