THE YAMASA DREAM

The new Davidoff Yamasá has been 20 years in the making. It all started out with Master Blender Henke Kelner’s impossible dream to turn the unforgiving swampland of the Yamasá region into a successful tobacco-growing field. When everyone said it couldn’t be done Henke persisted. He held an unwavering belief in the natural bounties and potential for the land.

And he was right. On an endless pursuit to bring cigar aficionados new tastes, experiences and pleasures, Henke Kelner and his team of experts relentlessly nurtured and cultivated the Yamasá soil – a soil that was relunctant to change. Discovering that the soil contained too much sand and loam, they added nitrate and calcium by hand to each and every single tobacco plant. In Henke’s own words, they “continued, continued and continued” until they got it right. Thanks to his determination, a journey into the new Davidoff Yamasá series is truly one to an undiscovered planet.

THE YAMASA EXPERIENCE

The new Davidoff Yamasá series combines tobaccos from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic with a wrapper and binder from the Yamasá region. The earthiness of the Yamasá region together with the spice and sweetness of the Nicaraguan Estelí and Condega tobaccos and the Dominican Piloto and Mejorado tobaccos will rouse your taste buds like never before.

Tasting Notes

The cigar has a deep and complex body that slowly reveals itself through an array of beautiful flavors: nuts and spices, coffee, cedar wood and notes of black pepper. It’s a cigar that burns with the same pioneering sense as its creator. In fact, you’ll wonder how it was done. The answer – the strong conviction that in fact, it could be done.

A welcome inclusion in the August subscription box. The cigar itself is nice to smoke and lasted a good 40-45 minutes with pleasant flavours and a little sweetness. The only thing that would put me off buying more is the price which I feel is rather steep for an individual cigar when there are certainly several comparable ones to be had for a lot less money. To justify spending double figures a cigar needs to be pretty spectacular. Whilst I would go as far as to say that this is indeed a remarkable cigar it is by no means extraordinary!

Davidoff needed 20 years to create the lovely wrappers and binders from the Yamasa region to achieve the dream of Master blender Henke. Everyone told Henke and Davidoff that is impossible to cultivate tobacco in this area but they did.

Yamasa region is a lovely area to cultivate tobacco. Swampy, humid and drenched with regular, heavy rainfall, the soil in the region has a low pH count, but is rich in minerals. These minerals, or micro-nutrients, include boron, iron and zinc, and play an essential role in contributing to the quality of the tobacco leaf. The climate is very similar to the Cuban climate, and therefore hugely beneficial to the growing of tobacco, the Dominican Republic is primarily tropical. There are, of course, local variations in temperature and rainfall but in general, highs of 104°F are common in protected valleys, as are lows of zero in mountainous areas.

This is not the first time that Davidoff used Yamasa Wrapper and binder. They created the Puro D’ Oro range which won awards in 2012. Composed of 100% Dominican tobacco which was the Dream of Henke to create a 100% Dominican Puro. Most of the Dominican cigars in the market don’t use Dominican wrappers. I remember I have enjoyed some cigars from the Puro D’ Oro range and they were some of the best New World Cigars I have enjoyed in my life. Unfortunately, they are now discontinued.

Now they created the Yamasa range composed of Dominican Yamasa Wrapper and binder with aged Nicaraguan filler combining the earthiness and spiciness of tobacco cultivated in the volcanic soils of Esteli and the Sweetness of the tobacco cultivated in Condega. This makes a great combination. I have sampled the Petit Churchill of this line measuring in at 4” x 48, and has a lovely construction.

The first puffs of the cigar begins with a cold smoke, earthy, fresh cut grass accompanied by cedar notes and a hint of roasted almonds. During the second part of the cigar you can appreciate the taste of the fusion of both Nicaraguan fillers, with brown sugar notes, creamy, earthy and a kick of pepper at the same time. This is a great fusion of flavours. The cigar ends even more creamy but becoming more peppery.

Nice smoke. Medium- full but I expected a bit more strength in this cigar. One of the negative point in my opinion is the high price of the cigar £17.99 each. But this is a cigar that I recommend to try because it uses an unique wrapper and binder, the fruits of the 20 years effort and dedication of Davidoff and his Master blender Henke. I feel after the smoke it has a nicotine kick effect so I would suggest to remove the cigar from the cello wrapper and age it for a few months in the humidor.I still prefer the Puro D’ Oro with the Yamasa binder and wrapper. But hopefully Davidoff will make it again in the future! - David Turmeaus Liverpool
