COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.

Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.

All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.

LINEA 1492 - SIGLO VI

The Cohiba Línea 1492 range was first announced at a reception at the Captain General's Palace in Havana on 4th November 1992, which took place during a Festival held to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.

The Linea 1492, originally consisting of five sizes - Siglo I, II, III, IV and V before the VI was introduced in 2002, were expressly introduced to mark Columbus's 500th Anniversary and each Siglo (which means 'Century' in Spanish) commemorates one the five subsequent centuries.

The Linea 1492 is classified as medium flavoured and remains the lightest flavoured line of Cohibas.

Please note: Matches not included.

Tasting Notes

Launched to commemorate 10 years of the Siglo range. This unusually big format cigar makes it possible to appreciate the aroma and taste of the Linea 1492 with complete intensity. A must try for any serious cigar aficionado.

"A tawny-hued toro with an excellent draw and even burn. Initial grassiness dissipates for a warmer, toasty smoke of cinnamon, nutmeg, liquorice and baking spices with a woody undertone..."

Quite possibly my favorite cigar. If you want a great Cohiba experience, but with far better value for money than a Behike, then this is a superb choice.

The examples Ive tried from 2018/19 have been poor. Not bad cigars, but absolutely not worth £50 a cigar.. thats insane. Prices have been rocketing up the last couple of years especially and I can no longer justify buying these (among many other vitolas). There are a lot of other regular production Havanas that are at least as good as these and often much better, especially of recent production. Im afraid the pricing of cigars in general in the UK is exploding into sheer extortionate levels. When these are at their best, Id say theyre worth maybe £30 each, max. When they are thoroughly average as has been the case lately they smoke like £20 cigars at best, not £50 cigars. Absolutely ridiculous.

My very first Siglo VI. A beautiful, hefty cigar with a fine sheen to the wrapper. It lit easily, and intreagued throughout. It has a unique scent on the draw, which i love, reminiscent of tne finest aged Dunhill tobaccos. A cigar for special occasions, certainly. Against this must be set that it is twice the price of some very fine equivalents. Im glad ive got nine more though.

Enjoyed one of these beautiful cigars the other evening in the company of my best friend, over a couple pints in the pub garden on a warm evening. Id forgotten just how lovely these cigars are and these had been in my humidor for a good couple of years. Expensive, but worth the money and now not easy to come by especially in boxes of 25. Lovely, lovely thing, but will spoil you for anything else! Sublime!

Best Christmas smoke to date received box of 10 Christmas morning from the missus. First 1 toasted up n smoked after breakfast . 2nd n 3rd with the old man after Christmas roast (sharing them must be festive season hahaha ) 4th with couple of drams after kids in bed . 5th after man under match down local . Writing this plan on burning the 6th. Don't think the remaining will get much aging in humidor before new year . Hopefully will have willpower to let at least 1 rest for a couple of months.
