COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.

Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.

All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.

MEDIO SIGLO - La Linea 1492

Released in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cohiba, the name literally translates to 'Half Century' and its dimensions are inspired by the shortest (Siglo I) and the widest (Siglo VI) cigars from La Linea 1492

Tasting Notes

93 / 100

"Golden brown in colour, this well-constructed short robusto is topped with a flat head and triple-seam cap. First puffs are a bit grassy but quickly reveal a richly layered smoke of almond, coffee bean, oak, vanilla and rum, culminating in a walnut finish. The draw and combustion are open and even..."

Make no bones about it, I am a Cohiba Fan. I love the traditional Cohiba flavour within a cigar. I also find that out of a box of 25 Robustos, 50% will be absolutely amazing, bursting with this Cohiba note. And the remainder overly spicy and lacking flavour. I find myself still buying the boxes though. I tend to get home from work or the gym quite late in the evening, dinner is usually after 8pm and on certain nights, it’s nice to get away from the TV and head out to the shed and the old deckchair. However these late finishes to the day mean that quite often I need a cigar to be reasonably small, ( 45-1hr smoke ). This is an issue for the Cohiba fan who like a thick heavy ring gauge. Enter the Medio Siglo: 52 ring gauge and 4 inches in length. This is essentially a Petit Robusto. A vitola which is gaining popularity for its thick ring, and a reduced length, over the traditional Robusto. I currently have Romeo petit Churchill’s in my humidor, along with the Hoyo De Monterray Petit Robusto’s so I am a genuine mid week evening fan of the Vitola. Add the Cohiba flavours and BOOM. Magnificent! This is by far the best Petit Robusto I have ever smoked. The burn started off fantastically well but started to go off course some way into about 25 mins into the stick, but who cares. Corrected it with the torch and continued on. Wrapper = lovely, smooth oily deep brown and chocolaty. Will I be buying a box of these, your dam right! This smoke is nothing short of sublime. I even found the strength and body slightly fuller than the traditional Cohiba Robusto’s which is in my top 3 favoured cigars of all time. If you get a chance, and like a good thick short smoke .Try this cigar. As long as you don’t mind medium to full body smokes, this will blow you away!
