Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Tasting Notes

The best of the Julieta format. This cigar is rich, generous and of greater strength than it appears at first. Definitely one of the top ten Havanas in this size bracket.

95 / 100

"...Both nuanced and bold, this refined cigar leaves very precise impressions of smoky peanuts, leather and roasted coffee beans on the palate. Sweeter notes of candied citrus and dried fruit balance the savory components. Complex and harmonious..."

I purchased 3 of these on a recent trip to the St James store, had been really looking forward to trying one after some rest in the humidor. The one I went for last night was completely unsmokable! Even sucking my cheeks in I couldn’t get a draw out of it, I cut more and more off it trying to get something to no avail. In the end I had to bin it, I wonder if the other two are the same! These come with a hefty price tag and I hope I didn’t waste the money and damage my view of these permanently!

For the first 5-10 minutes I was relatively underwhelmed. It was perfectly nice, donít get me wrong, but nothing I hadnít tasted before. But then some magic started to happen. The initial leathery, campfire tastes made way for beautiful floral and citrus sweetness. Immense aromas of sweet orange zest, roses and leather. Towards the end, the spices and vanilla kick in to complete a wonderful 60-minutes of enjoyment. For a long cigar the burn was even for the most part with only occasional fixing required.

I smoked these cigars when I was on holiday in Cuba and they were fantastic.

Man oh man what a smoke, ordinarily slightly out of my price range but definitely the Rolls Royce of cigars. Got 5 of these beauties as Christmas present couldn't resist and broke after 3 weeks in humidor, although humidor set correctly saw white marks and panic set in, fear of miold! Old hand assured me it was blush, everything positive has been said about these, very smooth, great taste and aroma, lasted almost two hours savoured every moment, accompanied by several glasses Bushmills 10 year old single malt. Dear C Gars you should consider stocking fine Irish whiskers as they are superior to Scotch.
