COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

BEHIKE BHK 56 - 'VOTED BEST CIGAR OF 2010' by Cigar Aficionado. Rating: 97

With a limited annual production and the only Cuban cigar to include a fourth filler leaf (medio tiempo). It is without doubt the most exclusive 'regular' production cigar in the Cuban portfolio.

The number of a BHK stands for its ring gauge, so this stout model boasts a diameter of 56/64ths of an inch, which is one of the widest to be found in the entire Havana cigar group. It leaves plenty of room for the fourth component in the filler – the Medio Tiempo – that brings a startling intensity to the flavour.

Mitchell recommendsBehikes have a limited annual production so when they are gone - that’s it for the year. That makes them a candidate for laying down, maturing and collecting and many customers are already making 10 year plans for laying down a quantity of BHK’s annually.

Tasting Notes

The BHK’s have a different blend to the 40th anniversary Behike (aged 5 years) as well as an extra Medio tiempo filler leaf which will give the cigar a very distinct flavour characteristic as this is a dark leaf from the top of the plant.

90/100

"Topped with a small, tight pigtail, this lightly colored cigar burns a bit crookedly, but draws well. It’s toasty and grassy with some drier notes of wood and hay, and richer notes of walnut and café au lait. The finish is rather easygoing..."

In my oppinion very few cigars match up to the Cohiba 2004 Sublime, the Cohiba 2011 came a close second as does the BHK 56, a beautiful cigar so well made with spicy rich flavours and you need to enjoy this rare cigar on your own with no interference from anything just sit back and saviour it, a cigar very hard to find now with the 2004 Sublime virtually extinct but if you are lucky enough to find tbem ( Hair raising price tag by the way )...treat them like royalty.

What an absolutely beautiful cigar. Not too strong, Just the right amount of smoke and complimented nicely with my Dalmore Cigar Malt. I have another two of these that will be kept for a very special occasion.

This is my favourite cigar. I've smoked 3 in a row. Perfect size, flavoursome and smooth. But, seriously, the price is crazy. Even at half the price it's an expensive cigar. It should be around 25 uk pounds. I'd buy a box of 10 at 250.00, but because the price has gone so high I'm quitting cigars until I visit Cuba where I presume they are more affordable.

The most expensive cigar I've ever smoked but also the best. Unless you're brewsted and can afford to smoke these all the time then you owe it to yourself to smoke at least one.
